iPad: Kicking Windows back to the office

Summary: The allure of the iPad enticed millions to buy one for fun. The discovery that it could do everything desired outside of work led many to forget about using Windows outside of work.
Microsoft saw this coming and radically changed the design of Windows to work on tablets, desktops, and laptops. The folks in Redmond saw the writing on the wall and knew they had to change the OS into a tablet OS to keep Windows in the home. They already had the enterprise locked up so bringing Windows to the tablet was an effort to keep folks using the OS at home.
Most of the folks I interact with about Windows on tablets who like it, and are excited about it Windows 8, are those who either make a living in the Windows ecosystem or have a special need for using it outside the scope of typical home computing. Having full Windows in a tablet form is just what they need to do what they want both for work and at home.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, there aren't enough of thos enthusiasts to make a difference, as proven by the Surface RT debacle, and low Surface Pro sales (compared to the iPad). The vast majority have already been shown that their beloved iPad is all they need outside of work. The iPad has totally replaced PC usage in the home for many owners and kicked Windows back to the office.

iPads eh? Over lunch my colleague at work said "I was thinking of getting an iPad mini for my 3 yr old daughter". WHAT?!?! Just proves my point: consumers are stupid and have more money than sense. He'd spend 270 on something that his kid can do on a 50 Android tablet...just because it's an iPad.

    Seriously, consumers are stupid!

    Me too.
I couldn't see a significant number of iPad or Android users swapping over to W8 tablets.

Still not clear to me why MS approached it the way they did. I suppose we will never know. Another marketing guy thinks it resulted from a mixture of arrogance and insecurity - panic was the word he used. He is probably right, he has held some very senior positions in the industry, I haven't worked in IT at all.

There is no doubt (in my mind anyway) the iPad is a "cool accessory" - most my mates have never bothered with iOS but would get an iPad rather than an Android (even tho' they have android phones...go figure) or an RT...credit to the Apple marketing machine for that...why can't M$ do the same?.. with their resources they should at least break even rather than 'dump' the Surface (in a manner of speaking...)

It must really be hard on you being so much smarter then those of us stupid consumers who have purchased an iPad. . .

    Hahaaa!

No, my point was that people just buy these things without consideration for who they will be used by and what they'll be used for. Honestly, if you're buying an iPad mini for your 3 year old you really do have more money than sense.

True. I too can't stand thinking why people would spend so much on some expensive iPad just because it is the hype. I don't own a tablet but maybe I'll just settle with a decent, not overpriced Android that can basically, call, text, take pictures and browse the Internet than for something that costs much more but would not do something groundbreaking anyway.

Consumers are basically brainwashed because of trend and if it wasn't for that, then iPad or any iDevice would not succeed in the way it is now.
