Did we all just witness Windows start to die?

The idea of "the death of the PC" is just that -- it's an idea. It's a hook that, if you believe in it (and I do), it can be quite informative about what seems to be happening to the PC industry, and the wider computer industry in which it sits.
But most people do not like the complexity that comes with power and flexibility. Some people just want to give their parents a box that lets them have a video call with the grandkids from time-to-time, and don't want to have to futz around configuring anti-virus software.
The reason why people buy smartphones and tablets isn't because they are necessary better or more worthy than PCs. People buy them because they now have the option to -- i.e. they can.
Go back five years and there was no choice. That last example of grandparents Skyping the grandkids -- that would have needed a PC. Now it can be done with a free-on-contract smartphone. Or an iPad, a Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, etc.
Surface RT was, by design, a good enough post-PC device implementation to compete with iPad and Android in that post-PC market. It ticked enough boxes to make a good showing -- certainly more boxes than Old Windows did.
But we know that Surface RT, and Windows RT has failed in terms of numbers.
More importantly, Surface RT also failed in terms of philosophy, taking the whole of the Windows 8 Project with it. The principle of the project -- namely that the post-PC was getting it wrong and that people were desperately after a "PC Plus" -- has now been shown to be flawed.
Microsoft has to stop selling Windows as a competitor to the iPad, and start selling Windows Phone as a competition to iPhone and iPad, and also as competition to Android smartphones and tablets.
Or to put it another way, if you're looking to compete in a market of oranges, maybe go out there with oranges, rather than try and convince people that they actually want lemons.
Did we all just witness Windows start to die? | ZDNet

Its my opinion (note the word 'opinion') that the reason PC sales are suffering is because of Windows 8. Sure, tablet purchases are high, but the PC is still a very necessary piece of hardware, and is not going to go away, at least not within the next 20 years or so.

You can't run a business and have productive employees with only tablets or smartphones; it just isn't going to happen. Name one tablet with the power to run something like AutoCAD (for architects) or Solidworks (3d design)? It doesn't exist.

If Windows 8.2 or 8.3, or maybe even 9 or 10 is designed more for desktops rather than tablets and has the same ease of use as Win 7, PC sales will come back. And so would the sales of Windows. Corporate America is avoiding Win 8; that's why sales of Win 8 (and PC's) are suffering.

That was always the question. I was asking it here before rtm. I was also doubting the posistioning of the ms devices, and the concept that including Office would be enough. For regular pc's I expected win 8 would be a very tough sell.

It might be a little early to conclude as the author has done, but it doesn't look encouraging for microsoft.

Windows 8 is just like 7 but has an additional advantage of being used on tablets... In my opinion Windows 8 is heaps better in terms of performance and stability on both desktops and tablets. I don't see windows dying anytime soon, not for another decade.

For sure, I wouldn't see windows or ms in general, 'die' or collapse or whatever. But I think top management needs to step aside and let some fresh blood in, as they seems to have lost touch with us... it's customer base.

Not taking a leak all over us, would be a good start...

One of the things you have to realize that most people have desktop and/or laptop computers. Most run Windows XP or Windows 7 or OS X on it. Why upgrade? Why get rid something your used to using? If it's not broken, why fix it?

Don't expect people to buy PCs every month or every year. If your the person that does that, something's wrong. Of course tablets will sell because not many have one.

Is Windows dying? Well Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows Phone are. Personally I'm happy that they're dying because its a complete mess. Time to start from scratch. Windows 7 and Windows XP have a good amount of marketshare and they work just fine. Windows 8 came into the world just to make even more fragmentation and OEMs are stupid enough to listen to Microsoft.

Is Microsoft dying? That's funny but of course not. Anybody told Microsoft to fire Steve Ballmer already?

Let's pretend Windows 8 and Vista never existed. Windows XP > Windows 7 > Windows 9. We use odd numbers now.
Let's pretend Windows RT and Windows Phone didn't exist. Tablets and smartphones run Windows Mobile OS.

First off, the Windows Phone 8 is far more functional and easy to use than any Android.
I know this to be fact cause I have used both.
I happen to love my Windows Phone 8 and Surface Pro.
Both suit me extremely well.

Have you ever used one for more than 5 min? My guess is, no.

Could I use my Surface Pro for work? For my line of work, yes in many areas absolutely, in fact, far better than using any laptop.

The surface pro is far more functional device than any Ipad or Android tablet, especially for technical IT use.
Such as Trouble Shooting PC issues, and many other things. Would I use it for AutoCAD? no, well, maybe for presentation stuff.
Could it handle it? my guess (and I don't know for sure) probably decent enough, not as a primary system for it, but certainly for presentation.

If my work said which do I want, android, Ipad, Surface RT or Surface Pro, I will pick/demand the Surface Pro, or a Win8Pro Tablet of any kind.

They are powerful, diverse, functional, and extremely useful.

I can successfully run 3 Virtual Machines, access network resources, among many other things.

I really wish people would know what they are talking about before they attempt to trash things they apparently know nothing about.

As for Desktop, no, Desktop will not be going away anytime soon. In fact, my company has recently attempted to go back to terminal services and dumb terminals, which failed in our area, but seems to be working in others.

The desktop isn't going away, if MS abandons it, Linux will pick up the slack.

The thing is, Lee, that many are intimidated by Linux. But those that aren't, and who value the 'desktop experience' will soon switch if MS continues to devolve the 'desktop' in favour of small, under-powered, under-featured tablets & hybrids.

No, it won't see Linux become No 1. But it would give it a good boost.

Also, I agree with those who believe Linux (or rather, its developers) is its own worst enemy.

They need to select ONE distro, and all concentrate on that. Fragmentation is a big problem for Linux.

The Windows Era Is Over

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) earnings report made it official: the Windows era is over. Microsoft shares fell over 11% on Friday, the biggest decline since the financial crisis.
The company whiffed on earnings, as consumers abandoned Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
Can Microsoft survive in a post-Windows era?
Microsoft admits it: The traditional PC is struggling
Some companies (Coca-Cola, Google) have blamed the weather for their recent struggles. But not Microsoft. To its credit, the Redmond tech giant was fairly upfront with what’s causing its problems.
On the earnings call, Microsoft admitted that traditional PC form factors, Windows’ home turf, are in a state of terminal decline. Demand among business users was up only moderately, and by Microsoft’s own estimates, consumer demand declined by over 20%.
That it isn't to say that Microsoft is ready to abandon Windows -- far from it. Management still believes Windows has a future. I disagree.
Investing in Microsoft
Microsoft’s recent earnings report confirmed what many observers already knew: the traditional PC (and along with it, the Windows empire) is on its last legs.
Microsoft’s initiatives to save Windows are unlikely to bear fruit. At this point, anyone involved in Microsoft should expect the Windows division -- which accounts for about one-fifth of the company’s revenue and one-sixth of its profit -- to dwindle away in the coming quarters.
New products, like Azure, may be able to replace Windows. However, that’s far from guaranteed given Azure’s list of competitors, including Amazon Web Services.

Sorry Wenda, not be to nasty sounding, albeit the jump to Linux is not going to happen. Been using Suse Linux for over ten years now (do like it), and just do not see it going into the manufacturing or business world, little own the medical industry. Just the idea of having to put into place a new and completely alien system like Linux would be a logistical nightmare for IT folks. . .God Forbid.

Not to mention the 1337 attitude that is rampant in the Linux community. I posted a question on a Linux forum and got half a dozen "you're stupid go away" answers. I recently posted a question on a windows 8 development forum and got 4 different solutions. One user event wrote out a sample app for me.

I believe Linux will never get anywhere near mainstream because of fragmentation and elitism.

They bemoan MS but do absolutely zero to try and elevate linux at all.

It's the Linux Devs and Community that keep linux in the ditches

To be honest, the LiNazis do like it that way. Makes them feel special.

The reason why so many people still run Windows XP is due to it's relative ease in running it and repairing it. When they get sick of not being able to use IE 8, they switch to Windows 7 SP1, which is still a little easier to repair than 8. Actually I take that back, 8 is very easy to repair when it can repair itself, unless its a hard drive read error, which 8 causes and can't fix. When 7 freezes or crashes, all you need do it run CHKDSK, but when 8 freezes, you MUST scan the drive for errors. Maybe this problem is only me, because I installed 8 onto a hard drive that is failing- So right now I'm moving the partition to my Hybrid drive and maybe that will work better.

I've had NO problems with this machine, it's run great ever since I installed 8, I havent had to CHKDSK once, at least not on my own initiative, it seems to run automatically when it finds something wrong.

I think what irks people is the basic lack of the start menu, and most people won't even TRY it. What people want, is a new OS which is as easy to use as 7 is, but with the desktop improvements that 8 has. I'm hoping MS makes a SP2 for Windows 7 that adds these new features in. So Microsoft wanted to cram a tablet OS into the same OS as a new desktop, but they choked the desktop to deth in favour of the Tablet side. That's the main issue there, because anyone who runs Windows 7 will not even bother with MetroModernorwhatevertheywannacallit.

This is what I have been saying for years. I refer to them as LiNazis
They bemoan MS but do absolutely zero to try and elevate linux at all.

It's the Linux Devs and Community that keep linux in the ditches

To be honest, the LiNazis do like it that way. Makes them feel special.

There are jerks in every computer community.

The 2nd worst thing is when people refuse to answer the OP's problem/question (I don't mean going off topic).

They will offer all sorts of alternatives (often without an explanation): "Why would you want to do that? Do this ..."
When that doesn't answer/solve the OP's problem/question they vanish.

Often the original question is never answered (and no actual attempt is made to answer it).

Wenda.

My problem hasn't been so much "you're stupid go away". Some folks in Linux (Ubuntu) forums try really hard to help, the trouble is sometimes no one, NO ONE knows the answer to your problem and that seems to have something to do with the way hardware manufacturers relate to Linux people. What happens more commonly for me is I'll google a problem and come across a promising Ubuntu forum web page and it'll come up with something like "this was posted in the wrong place and was taken down" or some such answer that makes me want to tear my hair out. My impression is Ubuntu pays too much attention to procedure and not enough to practical problem solving.

That's so damn true, When I was running Ubuntu I went in for some minor problem and was assaged by 3l33t ]-[/\X04s. Cos I was a newbie I didn't deserve to axe for their help.

Haha, and you think that's bad? It's Ubuntu, one of the more newbie friendly Linux distros. I started using Linux back in the days when you still had to write out every freakin' sudo line to do an installation of the system. If anyone remembers this, some distros made you type in the specific make and model of your keyboard, mouse, etc. A question about the syntax of a command line will result in half a dozen "you're stupid go away" answers.

You can still find this kind of attitude in some Linux distro forums, usually the more 1337 ones.

Oh well, if those 1337s believe their attitude is what's best for the Linux community, then all the more power to them. I don't really care anymore as my time is used for more useful things than trying to figure out the next sudo command line.
