Microsoft: We’re 18 Months Behind with the Windows 8.1...

Windows 8 was supposed to bring an avalanche of new products to the market from the very beginning, as Microsoft hoped to see customers around the world fully embrace the operating system as fast possible.

That didn’t happen, however, and Windows 8’s market share has barely reached 5 percent last month, according to statistics provided by researcher Net Applications.

Since Windows 8.1 is just around the corner, Microsoft expects many more OEMs to adopt the operating system and, as a result, to bring more touch-capable devices to the market in the coming months.

Microsoft: We?re 18 Months Behind with the Windows 8.1 Ecosystem

Hi there
?????

2 Million years IMO -- by the time this gets fixed the whole Tile type of interface will be stupid even on a mobile phone -- try installing say 300 apps on your phone and now see how the stupid interface works. You'll be forever scrolling even if you CAN group some apps - and it's not so easy to do that either on several Android phones.

As far as the article is concerned - why would I WANT an 8 inch device --too small to be useful as a COMPUTER and too big to be sensibly portable like a phone so it would only have very limited use for me anyway.

If I need a tablet then a "Convertible" seems the obvious way to do it -- I still want to be able to connect things like 3 LARGE monitors at home and a proper keyboard and mouse too.

Cheers
jimbo

Goodmorning Everyone,

I think Microsoft should scrap the Windows 8.1 project completely and put all their time and thoughts and funding into staff to make the new Windows 9 build without any metro UI and to make sure Windows 9 will be a full installer type OS only for Desktops and Laptops next time around...

Microsoft please don't spend a second or any more money on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and just work on Windows 9 for us please...

Regards,
ExplorerTML

If Windows 8 had something rather spectacularly new on the Desktop that would take advantage of newer, more powerful PC/laptop hardware, it would make far more sense as a "desktop" operating system.

It took this long for them to admit that they are behind with this Windows 8.1 and it might take even longer to fix what mischief it has already done...

8.1 is free to anyone already running 8. From what I have read the final version will also be free to anybody already running Windows 8. I tried the preview and it was a bit to buggy for me. I've gone back to 8 for now.

It will be free as people won't want to spend money on an operating system upgrade once per year. And these changes from 8.0 to 8.1 are very small, so it's much more like a service pack than an operating system upgrade.

 I really don't know what Ballmer needs more to realize that MOST just doesn't like/want 8 and his "ecosystem".

Come on, Microsoft... let's go with the next step (if they have one)

The next step ( or maybe the one after that) are simple little devices we are expected to jab at while emitting a caveman grunt.

Everything will be controlled for us - all from the clouds. We will do only what we are allowed, and will be paying subs or usage fees forever. We are not expected to understand any of that legacy ownership or privacy stuff.
