Will Chromebooks be the dagger in Windows 8's heart?

Sales of Windows-based PCs may be plunging, but shipments of Chromebooks in the second half of the year are expected to rocket by as much as 200% to 300%, according to a just-released export. Acer, Lenovo, HP and Samsung will all be cashing in by launching new Chromebooks. How badly will Windows 8 be hurt?
While you weren't looking, Chromebook sales have been taking off. They typically sell for under $300. The best-selling laptop on Amazon as I write this is a Samsung Chromebook with a 1.7 Ghz dual processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 16 GB hard disk. Digitimes claims that "Currently, Google, Acer and Samsung's Chromebooks together already account for about 20-25% of the US sub-US$300 notebook market, showing their rapid sales growth in the retail channel."

One has to wonder though, what the customer satisfaction rate is on them... not a ton of apps available for them really...

Will those work offline? There are locations where you're not able to get online for instance. And too much cloud apps would not function in this case.

A minor drawback... nope, a major one.

I doubt it, I was checking out a Chromebook, not impressed. I cold just use Chrome with all of my addons like I do now with Windows 8, and get the same functions, it is basically a stripped down Linux with a Chrome Browser set to handle all of the Googol content.

I would say they're a lot less. Netbooks could run pretty much anything on them, although they weren't good gaming machines. You could run normal windows apps. Not so with Chromebooks. I don't think you can run Linux apps either.

Yes, but can you get a tablet and Bluetooth keyboard for $250, that boots in 8 seconds, can be refreshed in about 20 seconds, that stores no personal data in the event that it is lost. And it's practically impervious to any malware, spyware or virus.

Hi Everyone,

By chance if only Microsoft doesn't make their new Windows 9 Build and remove all the metro UI crap and make a sound OS for only Desktops and High End Laptops, I strongly feel Microsoft will be down the river without a paddle and it will be just a matter of time before we slowly don't see that's much of Microsoft as they will start to fade away into history...and that is a fact...

Regards,
ExplorerTML

It doesn't do what they want, because they didn't bother to find out what it would do. They probably just thought that it was a cheap laptop and would work just like their old one.

It's amazing to me that people buy all of this stuff with no idea as to what they are buying.

In the evenings, when I am home, I do a handful of things that require "the internet".
  1. I read my email, which is gmail
  2. I read this forum, and 2 or 3 others. And I type a lot of words.
  3. I look at books, MP3's and other stuff on the Amazon website.
  4. I look at a weather site to see the forecast for the remainder of the week
  5. I check out facebook, and watch videos being discussed on YouTube.
  6. I'll occasionally plug in the HDMI to my TV to share something with the family.

^ For the above tasks, my Chromebook works great for me. Sure, it cannot do these things if my Internet is down, but then again all of those things require the Internet....so my Windows laptop won't do it, a Mac wouldn't do it, my tablets won't do it, etc.

I do a whole heck of a lot more with computers in general, but I'm an IT guy and I sit in front of a computer 40-60 hours a week doing all of these other things. When I am at home, I rarely use my computer for anything more than the things above.

As a chromebook owner, 100% satisfied. it does exactly what I expected. It's durable, it's safe for my kids to use (they cannot install anything onto it), and if stolen or lost...no personal data is stored directly on the device. The battery life is great, it's light and small, and it boots very fast. It's not a full fledged personal computer, I'm aware of that, and for what I use it for, it doesn't need to be.

Unfortunately, I imagine that most Chromebook buyers do not know what they're getting into (as was pointed out earlier). Of course I imagine that Best Buy staff are also not standing there advising would-be buyers of the limitations of the product.

If I want a PC I will buy a PC, but then I know the difference between a PC and a Chromebook.

They're getting more popular simply because most people are braindead facebook and blogging users. Nothing more to it. You can't do any serious long term work on it.

A couple months ago, I published an app on the windows 8 store using only my hp envy x2. I wrote the app using visual studio 2012. I debugged it on the x2. And I published it using the x2. And the x2 has an atom processor (gasp).

The chromebook is a gimmick. Just like the retina display. It sounds good and all to the braindead users. But in the end, you can't do any serious work with it.
