VLC now being targeted by Movie Chiefs

Quite strange. What has that got to do with HBO?

Must be a mistake.

The dvd consortium should be pleased vlc and others are providing an alternative now MS has decided to dump dvd related stuff. Anything that keeps people able to use dvd functionality will help them

HBO offers Game of Thrones which is the show being heavily pirated. I can see taking down Game of Thrones torrents, but not VLC. Might as well take down Linux, OSX and Windows which can playback these movies while you are at it.

It's a false complaint. VLC has nothing to do with the content people choose to watch with it, legit or otherwise. As of now, VLC is the only way people can watch DVDs in Windows 8 without Medea Center.

It boils down to sheer greed, and an insane desire to monetise every nano-bit of the internet.

When will companies understand if you sell it for less you will sell more!

Apple figured that out with their .99 per song system, instead of the industry's $20 per CD for 3 or 4 good songs!

Hi there
In fact sometimes they really don't mind causing a little bit of Piracy -- by making a popular Show really restrictive (i.e only shown in a very small area) it gives the makers HUGE publicity - far more than just by "normal Channels" -- and as for stopping piracy completely - you've about as much chance as getting the entire Atlantic Ocean squeezed into a 5 Litre Gas can.

What DOES irk me about this is how the MPAA get away with making what is an obvious mistake and not issuing apologies -- OK VLC can be used (just like any other multimedia player) to watch pirated content but it doesn't OBTAIN pirated material -- and if these companies in the days of fast internet and the "Global Village" still persist on pursuing an old fashioned business model then piracy will always be there.

What they need to do is release content WORLD WIDE on the Internet (charge if necessary) . Radio for example is available from everywhere quite free - I often for example listen to the WGBH HD2 classical music station from Boston MA.

I'll admit I've used torrents for some TV shows --there's often 0% chance of ever seeing these "legit" or even being able to buy a DVD -- and I WOULD if available.

A load of TV series "torrenters" are similar -- we would be QUITE happy to pay for content if made available -- but the ostrich like solutions of the MPAA make me wonder if people in that industry will EVER learn. Automated blocking of URL's should be made punishable by serious Court fines or even Jail terms unless each and every URL blocked has a valid reason given.

(Personally I think Game of Thrones is rubbish -- probably am in a minority of 1 on the entire planet -- but I did enjoy the US version series 1 of House of Cards --and I couldn't get it via NETFLIX which I would have PAID for -- stupid message "Due to rights restrictions ...." and all that B/S so of course NO money for the show makers from me and another customer of "one of those sites" - and I suppose it will be the same when series 2 appears).

As far as e-books are concerned - again the price is still often too high -- but once the price drops to around 2 or 3 USD per e-book then it's fine by me. The Author's royalties in fact are much the same whether it's a USD 1.99 or USD 19.99 price for the book whatever form it's delivered to the customer so the argument that cheaper prices deprive the author of income doesn't wash in most cases and considering the distributional and production costs of digital versions vs physical versions the price differentials should be much larger than they are now --iTunes at USD 0.99 probably has it right for the music industry.

Cheers

Hi there
What about those of us who can ONLY get these shows via this type of "service" - even though if available legitimately would be quite happy to PAY -- I don't think you can call all "Pirates" greedy unlike the people on THE OTHER side of the coin (MPAA etc).

Also what about long since out of obtainability of some Music - sometimes people distributing stuff via these "Services" are actally helping to keep some stuff alive which might become popular again later and also preserve for posterity some music that would otherwise never be heard again.

It's not all BLACK - what there should be of course is a World wide Digital library containing nearly everything - some content available free while others would be purchase (at sensible prices) -- but I suppose to have these types of organisations on Planet Earth where people even complain about some new houses being built in their village -- well the Omens aren't too good. !!

Cheers

People tend to resort to piracy when the delivery is bad. For example, people in certain countries cannot buy or watch certain things so they resort to piracy to get the content they want. If the delivery system is good, then piracy tends to decrease.
