Perhaps it doesn't look as if schools will be rushing to buy these things.

Good. If they want to teach the kids something, get them raspberry pi or similar.

No sense in buying a load of proprietary stuff and turning the kids into mini-metrotards.

Isn't this a bit much? Metrotards? I can understand you hating metro on desktop. But now you're hating it on tablets. Anyway, this post will probably get deleted anyway.

Here is the solution:
- scrap the RT program: no one needs a new platform/ecosystem besides iOS, android, and W8
- throw all resources towards the actual W8/Surface
- create low cost Surface "home": the surface pro is high-powered, which makes it too expensive for normal users who don't need that much power to update facebook etc.
- Change W8 so that it has a dedicated desktop version that works like W7 with improvements: It is OK t have phone/tablet/desktop look and feel similar. this binds costumers. But a desktop/laptop user has different user needs than a phone/tablet.

You are welcome, now get me my golden parachute for pointing out the obvious that your highly paid managers could not see.

Hi there.
the RT is really not fit for purpose --should never have been released. I've also posted elsewhere that the OFFICE RT app on it behaves simply as a Toy version of Office -- any proper POWER EXCEL user wouldn't be able to use it decently for starters.

Maybe the penny is finally beginning to drop at Ms. Their first foray into this type of market should have been to use a platform they have had years and years of experience in supporting -- and to realize that a Gap in the tablet market -- even amongst iPad users --was the ability to run and install STANDARD Windows applications (above all Ms Office in its entirety).

I'd be very surprised indeed if the RT survives in its current form beyond the end of the year. (Nothing wrong with ARM architecture - but it should have been easy to fix the micro code so standard Windows applications would run on it). The new INTEL Haswell chip in any case changes the whole game in tablets -- provides a powerful processor using much less energy --hence longer battery life. Tablet users need LONG battery times -- this isn't so much of an issue for PC users although decent battery life is never a bad thing.

Cheers
jimbo

Microsoft is cutting the price of its Surface RT tablets

Microsoft is cutting the price of its Surface RT tablets, base model to cost $349

Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Surface RT tablets. Sources familiar with Microsoft's Surface plans have revealed to The Verge that the price cut could occur as early as next week, with each model being cut by $150. Microsoft's move to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets follow slow sales, and efforts to sell the devices elsewhere at lower rates. The software maker recently launched an education program to sell the Surface RT to schools at $199, and it has been clearing stock of its devices at its Tech-Ed and Worldwide Partner conferences recently.

Update: Staples has confirmed the price cut in a listing in its weekly promotional ads. The price cut comes into effect on Sunday July 14th.

If they keep dropping the price I might get one.

Just got the HP Envy X2 for the Minister of Finance, she likes it and so do I.
11.6" convertible, screen detaches for a tablet, full Win8. It's a nice solid feeling unit.

Yes, be very nice to the Minister of Finance, buy her a new computer, then submit the request for a laptop upgrade and it's approved immediately.

Will see if it's down to what I believe more competitive with the price tag of Acer Series. ;-)

Rather then seen as a failure of Windows 8 devices, I think it's an indication of too high an original price point. They would probably have been better served to have started at these prices, and gotten more of their devices "out there".

You have the point. I dont know whether MS did not rely on market prediction, or, they were too confident with the price?
