Windows 8 Preview Sends Feedback Automatically, Including Software and Hardware Info

Early adopters get to play with the Developer Preview of Windows 8 for free and Microsoft gets feedback in return.

This quid pro quo arrangement must already be familiar to all testers of the company’s software products, since it traditionally governs all pre-releases of future technologies from the Redmond giant.

Of course, Microsoft makes no secret about harvesting user data from early adopters testing Windows 8 Developer Preview Build 8102 Milestone 3 (M3).

Is there any way to see what information it is sending? I'm worried that it isn't sending the information when my system freezes up every few hours.

I don't have much concern with them recording my data... in fact, I see it as a positive. I am benefiting the cause! ...or at least I think I am.

The Customer experience improvement program can be turned off. But IDK whether WDP follows any rules.

I don't want to turn it off. I just want to check to make sure that it is actually sending the data that I want it to send. I have been suffering from random freezes on my laptop (though strangely, not my desktop) since I moved to and adopted Windows 8 as my primary and only OS. The laptop freezes without warning and upon rebooting, the only evidence that I can find that anything went wrong was a message in the even log saying that the previous shutdown was unexpected. There is no crash dump. I hope they roll out the beta soon...

Just speculation, but have you tried reinstalling Windows 8 on your laptop, then immediately installing all available windows updates? Sometimes a fresh install might do better (seeing as there are a lot of weird bugs going around). Then slowly install each piece of software one by one, and see if you notice any more freezes.
If you freeze without the software and updates, you know it's a hardware issue, if it freezes with the updates, it's a windows system issue, and if you freeze with your programs it's a compatibility issue.

I did try a fresh install. I didn't try slowly reinstalling the software. I'll have to get on that...

This is what the ceip collects.

•Configuration Data (Hardware, Operating System, Feature configuration)
•Performance and Reliability Data (Application response times, connection speed, what caused an application to crash)
•Program use (the things you do with an application, but not the data you process)

    Hi there
MS ISN'T the evil empire it's often portrayed as being.

It's relatively simple to see what's being sent out over the internet -- just check the logs of your router.

If you are really worried about this type of application just install in a VM and either block or log the outgoing Internet requests.

Honestly I'd rather trust MS collecting information than giving my credit card or security details to some overseas Call Centre whenever I need to call my Bank.

At least Bill Gates (and even today) his foundation is one of the biggest charity sources in the world.

Without going too far into Politics -- Who would you rather trust - Lehman Bros, Dexian Bank or MS.

I know who I would choose.

    Cheers

I know, I'm not worried about Microsoft spying on me. I want to make sure they are getting the data. I have doubts that my laptop is uploading the data every time it freezes, since it doesn't even tell me that something has gone wrong.

Hi there, as the title says when I boot to windows 8 I get a blinking cursor in the top left corner for about 1 second, then I get sent to the BIOS. If I boot to my Linux hard drive however everything works fine. I figured I would just install a fresh copy of windows, but when I boot to the...
My 8.1 Update 1 HTPC now sends us to the desktop instead of the Start screen when we close an app. I know of the setting in taskbar properties to always go to the desktop instead of start when an app is closed. This option is unchecked. It looks like any non-touch Update 1 PC just ignores this...
