The Windows 8.1 Preview Start Button Is an “Insult to...

Microsoft has brought back the Start button in Windows 8.1 Preview, but instead of launching the old and popular Start Menu, it actually gets users to the new Start screen.

The Start button is always visible when working on the desktop, just to make sure that users can quickly access the Start screen, while in Metro mode consumers are required to move the mouse cursor in the lower left corner to launch it.

Unsurprisingly, many Windows 8 adopters are fairly disappointed with Microsoft’s own way to address customer feedback, claiming that the new Start button is “an insult to everyone’s intelligence.”

LOL only a couple of people replied to the thread quoted in the article.

MS know many will be annoyed by fake start button. It is an ambush.

Hugely insulting. Hard to believe MS actually did it.

I think they put the start button to break the shell programs and the final release will break them. M$ does not listen to its customers any more they are on a path to nowhere.

Not sure about that. The 3rd party start menus are a godsend for MS. Without those, many more would have rejected win8.

It is very funny. Gerry Ratner will tell you. Telling your customers you think they are fools is the end.

1 - The most famous of them all, so much so that such gaffes are now known as "doing a Ratner".

Gerald Ratner wiped £500 million from the value of Ratners jewellers with one speech in 1991.

He said: "We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, 'How can you sell this for such a low price?' I say, because it's total crap."

He added that his stores' earrings were "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long".

Its not a "Start" button in the traditional sense. Left click sends you back to the metro interface and right-clicking will bring up a menu for options normally found in the control panel. Definitely not what people expected from Microsoft when they said they were bringing back the start button. Its like they spit in everyone's face instead.

The Telegraph can change that article now.

Number one should be the win 8.1 fake start button.

I updated my Classic Shell program yesterday and one of the changes was the start button icon, they were asked by M$ to change it.
Something is going to change with the RTM on 8.1 and it will not be good.

Actually, I don't miss the start button. I like Windows 8 as it is. But the start button on 8.1 is not the start button as we know it.

I think you all knew what it was going to be before the release. So what's new?

You may want to try Wenda's solution here: www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=4506

LOL. There is no "solution" to flicking the V.

MS is behaving very strangely. It is funny, for sure, but it could cost them dear.

Psychiatric definition of delusion: A belief held ... (by M$) ... in the face of all evidence to the contrary, that is resistant to all reason.

In the light of the exponential growth of mobile devices, and the consequent slowing down of traditional desktop PCs. And the fact that W8 has not exactly been a smash hit in the mobile market. And the depressed economic clime. It seems like insanity that M$ would not be doing all within their power to preserve their existing base of traditional desktop users. Rather than seeming hell bent on totally disenchanting them

Which seriously begs the question: Is there a mole inside the upper management of M$, whose dedicated purpose is to torpedo the company? Ballmer?

Or maybe we're delusional in thinking MS are capable of any rational response to consumer feedback?

I'm going to say something here but I'm only surmising and Could be wrong. So I'm going to ask that instead of dismissing it right away,to just think about it with an open mind. Now you've got to use your imagination. So let's just try to imagine that when Windows 95 was first released it would have had the same interface and everything would have worked much like Windows 8 is right now. Then all new releases after that would have had basically the same interface. Then early this year they would have released something that looked like and worked like Windows 7. I would guess that a lot of users would complain because Microsoft had the audacity to change something that was the normal way of using Windows. Now, knowing human nature, just think about it.

We did have something like Metro it was called DOS with Norton commander the only difference was the rectangles were text. Then we got Windows.
