Microsoft confirms DirectX 11.2 is a Windows 8.1, Xbox One exclusive

Microsoft has confirmed that DirectX 11.2, the next-generation version of its application programming interface (API) and hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for multimedia devices will be exclusive to Windows 8.1 and its Xbox One console.

Meanwhile none of the game developers are losing any sleep with this news as most just use snippets here and there or just hang with DX9/10. If you look at a lot of game titles just being released today, most of those aren't even using DX11, or at least not all features.

I find it interesting Microsoft is making such a big deal with this seeing that they don't really support the PC gaming anyway. Scared it might take away from their x-box sales I suppose.

Anyway as a huge gamer, I say again, if I decided to upgrade my main rig to Win 8, it won't be because of DX11.2. As far as I'm concerned, that's a hyped myth. Yeah they'll be some developers trying out the new API, but I don't see main stream, just as DX11 isn't main stream.

You won't see a lot of games written for it until there is a lot of hardware out there that supports it. It's always been that way as near as I can tell. I think its a good thing that they updated it. Locking it into Windows 8 or better not so much. You'll likely never find out if that was a "had to" or "just wanted to" situation. Still I think some progress is better than no progress at all. Just my 2 cents. :)

Exactly. And by the time games for it does become "mainstream" we my be on a different OS.

In a way Microsoft may be hoping the gaming community helps sway sales of 8 since the new API is exclusive to 8.1. I don't think that trick is going to work. Even if Microsoft sticks to it's guns.

If you look at the gaming forum here, no one is jumping up and down and screaming how wonderful 8 is over 7 in terms of gaming. Right now it seems to be a wash. So if we gamers are going to jump, the game developers are going to have to come up with some mind blowing games that can only be experienced on 8. I don't see that happening any time soon because of fear of alienating W7 users, which is still vast. And even Microsoft won't be able to kill off the OS fast enough.

Also, while DX11.2 will benefit the PC, I think the big benefit is towards Microsoft's x-box, just as Haswell is more geared toward laptops and ultrabooks.

Well se though. And you're right, progress is better than no progress. Something I always argue myself.

if you've ever played Rage, you know how amazing megatextures look. You look at the Xbox 360 running Rage and you just can't believe they're getting this level of detail for an 8 year old platform with only 512MB of RAM, shared between the GPU and CPU. And that was done in software by a genius in Carmack (may have lost a step with game design but software design, he's still a king).

Tiled resources and partially resident textures are a feature of modern GPUs so it's nice now to have an API with hardware access to these features.
