Microsoft to send Bing to school this year

Bing may enroll at your local school by the end of the year.

Microsoft is developing a special edition of its Bing search engine geared specifically toward students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Known as Bing for Schools, the tailored version will remove all ads from search results, filter out adult content, beef up privacy protection, and add learning features to promote digital literacy, Microsoft said in a blog posted Monday.

This new version will be free and entirely voluntary for any interested schools. No special software or unique Web address will be required to access the site.

That should push up the number of queries Bing handles.

And how's that going to stop kids to use Google or anything else ? Heck, I know some first graders that know more about net than their teachers. They would bypass that in a minute.

Boy anything Microsoft certainly brings out the negative....

Yes, there are people who use Bing

If an education department sets up Bing as default search engine, than that what the kids will use.

No, this isn't forced learning anymore than reading a particular book is.

This is a great Idea Microsoft is putting forth

If Google is your flavor that's cool too.

And yes, millions of people use IE, including most businesses and academic institutions.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean most don't.

I did not say that nobody uses IE, actually it is the most used single browser but not when compared to all other ones together, FF+Chrome +Opera ++++, then it falls far behind. As a matter of fact IE 10 is pretty good and by all the accounts IE 11 will be still better. The only thing is, there's not enough add-ons comparing to FF and so is not as usable. I use FF mostly but have some add-ons that emulate IE, like Plain Old Favorites and Save as .MHT, so I can have best of both worlds.
As for Bing, I use it only when I search for MS related stuff as it is highly biased that way. Google gives me better selection, just like Yahoo used to.
Maybe it is not too bad idea to restrict some stuff from kids but it can be bypassed easily and what's there to stop them from using Google somewhere else ?

Nothing. That doesn't mean companies can't try providing a different service.

Microsoft is well aware of Google's prowess, that doesn't mean they can't try and penetrate that audience.

BTW I use Google exclusively, I just prefer the way Google works over Bing. Doesn't mean I hate or haven't used Bing, I'm just use to Google. This is what Microsoft has to overcome.

I wasn't a Windows 8 fan till I tried it. Microsoft is hoping once users try Bing, they'll like it. Nothing wrong with that.
