Will Windows 8.1 kick Windows 8 'Modern' developers to...

[h=1]the curb?[/h]
Microsoft will release a test version of Windows 8.1 at its BUILD developers conference next week, but there's a chance that Windows update could go a long way towards hurting those developers, and slowing app growth in the Windows Store. Is there anything Microsoft can do to combat that?
Reports say that among Windows 8.1's changes will be a boot-to-the-desktop option that allows people bypass the Start screen. Many users have been clamoring for it, because they find little use for the touch-oriented Start screen.
That will certainly please users. But it may also hurt those, like many at the BUILD conference, who are writing so-called "Modern" apps for Windows 8, apps that are written for the Start screen and for touch. The reason is simple: If people bypass the Start screen, they'll have no reason to run the Windows 8 apps that run on it.

Oh Nooo, still the same thing after all this time "Why oh why, Modern Ui, I do not use touch screen " when it doesn't need a touch screen to be fully operational, works with the mouse just fine, thank you. It's M$'s fault, they never explained that aspect. If they just changed the wording around and said that it is just a bonus feature so it would work both ways, there would be much less of crying and complaining about it.
I don't care much about Metro apps and have only one or two free ones but use all of the metro screen to start all the programs installed. One day, maybe (when they get cheaper) I'll get a touch screen monitor because so much more could be done on it.

Give people an application that works well and that is what they will use. Developers who make an app that is awesome that the people cannot live without, means these people will use the new UI. Right now, as far as I am concerned, we don't have that.

You'r right there, ad to that inability of more than half the world that doesn't even have a chance to buy a commercial app and there would have would to be some "Killer app" like "Visicalc" used to be for PC, that really made sense to have a PC at all. Visicalc, Word Perfect and other ones like that really made PC, not IBM.

I personally don't think giving people the option to boot to desktop is going to make it all that much worse for App developers. The ones screaming for this option aren't interested in Metro apps anyway. If Microsoft doesn't give in they'll just find another way around it. I'm with pparks1, I think a lack of quality Apps is going to turn more people off than anything else.

Booting to desktop we already have that with the third party shell programs and I think that the majority of Windows 8 users use that already. The APPs however are not there and will never equal desktop programs.

Agree 100%.

In theory the metro UI was clever in order to create a cross platform bio system like the Apple devices.

However, somebody didn't take in to account that the desktops/UI don't have to be identical in order for contacts, app data, calendars, email and files to sync.

Unfortunately, the grand scheme is to remove explorer.exe and metro will essentially be both the desktop and start menu. At the moment, Windows is running like Windows 95.. DOS & Windows simultaneously. Except in Win 8's case it is Metro and Desktop are doing the dual.

Two things I still can't get my head around. First, why Microsoft even cared about Apple's model. While they started the tablet, Android as a whole has more users than the iPad/iPhone. Also, let's not forget Microsoft totally dominates the desktop. Why change your core success? If they were looking at Apple they should realize even Apple's OSX is not the same is iOS. The whole thing never made sense. Maybe they were hoping the lack of modern apps would be made up by the desktop apps. Instead the whole idea has just alienated and confused just about everyone.

It just seems the the superstructure under Metro is insufficient, it is very limited as to how it will show graphics and text, and I just don't see hwo any of the most popular iPhone apps which work great on Droid as well, can ever be ported for Windows 8.

For instance, VLC Remote. My Banking apps, Quicken. My Von's Just for You app. My Digitech Stomp Shop app, which I use to load different effects into my Digi Stomp. I just don't see hwo any of those apps can ever work, so maybe they are increasing the things that can be done with Metro in 8.1

I personally think M$ should drop the name "Windows" because it isn't anymore.

We have gone back to the Windows 3.1 interface; flat, bland, cartoonish and amatuerish.

Perhaps they should change the name from Windows to PDOS (Portable Device Operating System). :D

Not true, It's nothing like win95 or even worse, win 3.1, There's nothing "amateurish" like in W8, on the contrary, it is business like and simple, maybe too much, but "amateurish would be if it was all in gaudy colors and pretty pictures. Also being pretty has nothing to do with functionality and that's the part they should put some more work in. The tiles in Metro should be more scalable, easier to sort and not allow desktop applications to show bunch of tiles tahat are created when you install such a prog. Actually all they had to do is to let an icon for a desktop up fill up whole tile and it would look much better. Also such tiles do not need to be filled with color, a simple, thin frame would be enough if anything at all. So much for "beauty" of the tiles, it would be better to make them easier to find. The look of proper Metro apps is dictated buy it's programing and not by windows. Authors of those apps should take care of that. Desktop and it's functionality is just the same as in win7 (except for Start menu) so who liked that has nothing to complain there.
Once again "Metro aka Modern UI" is not everything and will not be for a long time.

Hi there.

I don't think windows 3.11 was actually that bad considering we didn't have decent graphics at the time --- with the technology available and bog standard VGA Ms did a passable job (remember Mainframes at that time were still running really horrendous TEXT based systems and if you were lucky enough you might have got a terminal which had a 4 Colour display only --in general displays were Green monochrome (3277 type terminals).

Windows 3.11 was EXCITING for those days and had a decent display -- also FINALLY proper Word processing, spread sheeting, graphics and DECENT EMAIL.

Cheers
jimbo
