Samsung mass producing speedier solid-state drives

Apple's new MacBook Air has adopted faster solid-state drives made by Samsung. But Apple won't be the only beneficiary.

Samsung announced today that it has started mass-producing new PCIe solid-state drives aimed at the next generation of ultrabooks. SSDs that use a PCIe connection offer faster speeds than those outfitted with SATA (Serial ATA) connections.

As one example, Samsung's XP941 SSD can read data sequentially at 1,400 megabytes (1.4 gigabytes) per second, the highest speed offered by a PCIe 2.0 interface. In the real world, that means the drive can read 500GB of data or 100 high-definition movies as large as 5GB in just six minutes. Such a PCIe SSD is seven times faster than a conventional hard drive and 2.5 times quicker than the fastest SATA SSD.

Frankly, I'm sick of keep seeing the hard drive as the determining factor whenever I do a windows experience index, which is determined by the lowest score. No matter how much cpu gpu ram graphic etc raw power I put in my pc the darn hard drive would still keep the hole system down.

Me want these fast ssd's in me pc.

I see a new mobo configuration on the horizon.....no more conventional HDD bays in cases but rather a type of RAM slot for these new PCIe SSD's.

The next step is Sata Express which uses the Sata protocol over the PCIe buss. Present plans are for a 1 lane (8Gbps) and 2 lane (16Gbps) version using PCIe 3.0 interface. Should be backward compatible to current SSD drives and newer drives at the higher speeds. In the future I would think more lanes could be added.

Any idea why my SSD is listed as a 'Hard disk drive' instead of 'Solid state drive' as in your screenshots above? I am running W8 Pro x64 RTM from Technet. In Device Manager my SSD shows as a 'Samsung SSD 830 Series SCSI Disk Device'. I wonder if it's being on a Marvell controller might be the...

Hi guys. I have a problem: It seems to me that File History will only back-up files from your system *libraries.* In other words: It can't back-up from one external hard drive to another. This is very problematic. For instance: What if your main hard drive happens to be small, as it...
I just bought a Seagate ST750LX003 Momentus XT 750 GB as the new primary drive for my gaming laptop, and I'm wondering how to defrag them, and whether it is safe. I wanted the best of both worlds (space and speed) so I went for the middle ground. What is the difference between a regular HDD, SSHD,...
