Xbox One's DRM puportedly explained by "Xbox engineer"

http://www.neowin.net/news/anonymous-xbox-engineer-explains-drm-and-microsofts-xbox-one-intentions

>It's a long tail strategy, just like steam. Steam had it's growing pains at the beginning with all it's drm rubbish as well. [...] For digital downloads steam had no real competition at the time, they were competing against boxed sales. At the time people were pretty irate about steam, (on 4chan too...) It was only once they had a digital marketplace with DRM that was locked down to prevent sharing that they could do super discounted rubbish.
>Think about it, on steam you get a game for the true cost of the game, 5$-30$. On a console you have to pay for that PLUS any additional licenses for when you sell / trade / borrow / etc. If the developer / publisher can't get it on additional licenses (like steam), then they charge the first person more. [...] If we say "Hey publishers, you limit game to 39.99, we ensure every license transfer you get 10$, gamestop gets 20$" that is a decent model... Microsoft gets a license fee on first and subsequent game purchases, compared to just first now? That's a revenue increase.

So basically the Steam PC gaming model is apparently being used. This to me just hits home to what I thought after watching the Xbox One reveal event video, it's just a Home Theater/Gaming PC. Having to install games BEFORE you play? This is EXACTLY what PC gamers have been pretty much been doing since PC gaming began decades ago. Having your game collection in the cloud as well as games installed locally? That is LITERALLY what you do if you're a Steam gamer. And yes, the WHOLE reason why Steam is so hugely adopted among PC gamers is their absurd sales every six to eight months of which one of my gamer friends once said, "Steam's starting to piddle me off! I have so many games and I haven't even played most of them because they keep having sales!" It's freaking crazy to buy 32 gigs of a PC game for about 10 dollars. In the console world with a DVD (considering this would be 2 DVD that held 16 gigs) this would cost a good 80+ dollars.

The Xbox One is a obviously a huge shift for console gaming. It's no longer a simple user friendly gaming PC (I use this term lightly since last gen consoles are more closer to higher end smartphones in terms of hardware than a modern day gaming PC), it's more a straight up, I'm not f'ing around gaming PC running Windows, running more of a Steam model.

Your move Sony. ;)

that's a fascinating piece. if true, it maybe indicates that maybe the engineers should talk to the public rather than PR people because the PR people aren't good at talking tech and aren't talking like regular people would talk. a lot of great info about the Xbox One is being drowned out there because they're letting a narrative be written that isn't right.

I don't and won't use Steam etc on the PC (a better gaming setup than ANY console) so why would I want it on a console?

No, I'll stick to buying and playing my games the way I do now, on a PC, with no net needed, and no restrictions on what I do with my games once I've bought them (apart from pirating them for profit).

Sorry, but that system sucks, and I'm so not interested.

Hi there
I'd put a punt on the new XBOX actually being phenomenally successful -- but not in the way the original designers had in mind for it.

I can see the new XBOX as being great as a HOME SERVER - it has all the decent attributes for a server already built in -- it's network and multi-media "Sharing" ready and has a decent set of hardware.

I don't do gaming in any way at all on a PC (apart from the odd dabbles with the old standards like "Spider Solitaire" while waiting for say a slow web page to appear or a download to complete) but I do use a Server.

I really can see the XBOX as useful for this and might even replace an aging PC running SUSE and an apache server with one of these XBOXes.

If you look at the capabilities of these OUTSIDE gaming they are actually quite good and interesting -- and a lot cheaper than buying a COMMERCIAL computer designed as a server machine.

The heyday of Computer gaming in any case as passed -- while a HUGE market it's essentially a mature one and won't have anything like the growth potential of previous years -- which is why I think in the longer term Sony has backed the wrong horse as their device is ONLY used for Gaming whereas the new XBOX is far more flexible.

In the future people will want PROPER Virtual Reality and eventually full Holographic 3-D gaming experience -- that will kick start the market again - but these features STILL require an exponential leap in compute processing power to what we already have now.

I can probably source one of these VAT Free so it makes a better deal than a new desktop for my Server use.

Cheers
jimbo

While I typically agree with many of your posts, it's clear in this case that you don't own these consoles nor really use them.

The PS3 isn't just a gaming console, and the PS4 won't be either. For many people, their PS3 is their blu-ray player. I know that I use my PS3 far more for watching movies than I do playing games. In addition, the PS3 has app support and it's what I use at home for things like Netflix and Hulu. Also, the PS3 is the device that I use as a media streamer from my existing home server. I use it for watching movies, I use it for playback of my own video's and it's what I use for doing picture slide shows and such on the TV. My PS3 is also the device that I use for playing back music from my home network through the home theater system. < My current Xbox360 can do these things as well, but I prefer to use the PS3 for it. It's either faster, smoother or more reliable. It just works better for me. And also, the PS3 is silent, where the 360 is far from silent...it's a noisy little bugger and distracting in my opinion when watching movies.

On the flip side, the only real non-gaming thing that I do on my 360 is HBO-GO. For whatever reason, HBO-GO is not available on the PS3. If it were available on the PS3, it's surely where I would use it. And there are tons of posts for people pleading for Sony to get HBO-GO support on their PS3.

They haven't really explained the reason why it must call home every 24 hours or be online to play a single player game. So if my modem goes out, or I lose satalite for a a couple days, I can't even play a game. Personally I still can't get over the "we have a console for that, it's called the xbox 360" comment. Just came accross arrogant as heck to me...

I will admit I am not much of a gamer, and certainly not much of a console gamer. I use Steam, but they have the option to go offline and still play your games, you can keep it offline for quite some time. So if I lose interwebs, I can still go kill a dragon or two on Skyrim.

They also aren't saying much about used games or letting a friend borrow one....

Don't worry about your home internet going down, Microsoft corporate VP Phil Harrison suggests that you just tether your console to your mobile phone. It's only like 2KB for a daily ping, so it won't eat up your data.

I'm very curious as to why this daily check is really required. I'm very interested in hearing what it's really doing and what problems they believe it will resolve.

This is the bad side of the internet.

I have an Android smart-phone. I have an Android tablet (7", ICS). I have several computers, running over FIFTEEN different operating systems. About half are MS systems.

And these clowns think I want them all 'connected"?

ONLINE?

Some of these OSes are twenty years old, or more. I'd never consider putting them online, although i do use them semi-regularly.

I'll connect them (or not) on my intranet at my leisure. Or not. But I'd NEVER put most of them online.

MS and this whole concept can go to the Devil.

Not all of us have a mobile data plan to tether a phone in with, but granted, satellite internet in itself is terrible anyways. I've known people to pick dialup before satellite if they live out in the middle of nowhere and can't get a -real- connection. With satellite you're dealing with massive latency, extremely steep bandwidth monthly limits, and every little raindrop interfering with your connection. It's basically not even a usable connection type for websurfing let alone gaming.

Fortunately, I have a very stable cable connection where I live so this would not be a worry for me. I don't own any xbox consoles-- mostly because I can't use an xbox as an HD movie player (the PS3 can play blurays, I can't stand playing DVDs or other low res media on a 1080p HDTV) and you have to pay a monthly fee to play any game online. That's stupid, considering you already have to pay for your internet connection, now you have to pay for another internet connection on top of that to play a game with a buddy? Nevermind if you have an MMO subscription or something on top of all that. It's crazy.

Anyways, Microsoft only gave me even less reason now to own one of their consoles with the xbox one, because often times I get hand-me-down games from my sister for PS3 to save money and still get my game on and if you can't do that on xbox then you know there goes the source of much of my games right there. Steam works on PC because PC is so flexible and adaptable and Steam isn't nearly as restrictive, either. Also, because of sales, you can actually afford to buy and own many games instead of having to borrow most from a family member or friend to save money. Also, with Steam, you always knew that once you bought a game, it's yours to keep as long as you don't lose your account. You knew you weren't trading them from the start, so part of it is a 'what was it like before?' vs 'what is it like now?'. Xbox users are used to having a disc they can share.

I have been really lucky with my Connection out in the sticks. I run at close to 3 to 4 down and 2 up and haven't had much trouble losing it in rain. When we had all those super cell storms with tornado and such it was hit or miss though. The latency is a whole different issue, but they tell you up front not to try true online multiplayer unless you really like to respawn before you touch the keyboard. I am however stuck with a 27 GB limit a month, I haven't come close to hitting it yet. That's with two PC's, two Tablets, two smart phones attached to it all the time. Heck it blows the connection I had when we lived in town (DSL) out of the water....

They also aren't saying much about used games or letting a friend borrow one....

Geeve

there are 2 things:

1) the family/friends list. up to 10 people. you have access to the entire software library of that person. this is a potential boon as it means you don't have to personally purchase a lot of games but you can have access to a lot depending on how much each family member purchases. so person A has 5 games, person B has 7 games. that's 12 games between the two that they can play. only upfront limitation is that a game can only be played by primary owner plus 1 family member only.

How Games Licensing Works on Xbox One

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Microsoft defends the Xbox One’s licensing, used game policies | Ars Technica

For one, a family member doesn't have to be a "blood relative," he said, eliminating the extremely unlikely possibility that the Xbox One would include a built-in blood testing kit. For another, they don't have to live in the primary owner's house—I could name a friend that lives 3,000 miles away as one of my "family members" [Microsoft Xbox Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Yusuf] Mehdi said.

2) for used/trading/reselling...

this is for titles you actually don't want anymore and want to either give it away or resell it (and separate from the friends/family list). in terms of retailers, it has to be with a "participating retailer."

for selling or giving it to a friend, that's still unknown or very vague. Phil Harrison talked about how you bring the disc over, leave it there, friend wants to continue playing it so he would therefore have to pay for it. all nebulous stuff.

It is interesting, but I can't get past the always connected thing or the required kinect. That just rubs me in all the wrong ways....kinda like my 8th grade girlfriend LOL!

I'm not happy about the internet part of it but I can live with it. As far as Kinect goes I guess there is an option to disable it from listening when its off. I already have a Kinect sensor for my 360 and its always connected.

So if they are following the Steam model, can we expect super sales every few months? I doubt it!

I just can't get past the idea that I'd be essentially renting my games from here on out. Games that require internet connections, call home capability and patches are not games I'd be dragging out to play again years in the future. They might as well go download only at this point cause the media has no value anymore. It also pisses me off that my collection of XBL arcade titles aren't compatible with the Xbox One. Basically I just lost everything I bought and even though there are more XBLA games I want, there is no way I'm buying them now.
