Can you really blame them, though? I'm a full time engineer and part time developer. You're a builder, which you work with computers a lot, yes? In fact, most people here on this forum are professionals of some kind. The sales guys at best buy are high school graduates. How on Earth do we expect them to know more than us?

When I enter these stores, I tend to keep my questions limited to where something is and if they have xyz.

Even the geek squad guys don't know as much as you'd like to think. One time a colleague of mine had trouble with his laptop. Basically speaking, whenever he moved the windows around they don't move with his mouse cursor anymore. The outline just moved and then the window materialized where he dropped off the outline. He called geek squad and they sent someone over. The geek squad guy insisted that he needed to reinstall windows, which they wanted to charge $200.

I happened to have dropped by at that time to pick up something. I asked him if I could try "fixing" it. He said sure. I went into the animation property and changed it. Problem solved.

Just sayin'. You'll be much more happy with these stores and their employees if you lessen your expectations.

    It is an interesting move.

To borrow from Coke Robot, MS are once again "copying" from Apple. This time they are going to try and swamp them.

It might also help stop the oems from rebelling. What else can MS do to keep the lid on it. They are paying platform subsidies, reducing license fees, spending a fortune on advertising, and now promoting the oem products in stores alongside their own, it appears.

It might work for MS. Tim has a couple of surprises up his sleeve - we shall see what happens.

Microsoft announced a new strategic partnership earlier today, revealing that it would create a Windows Store in every single Best Buy in the United States and Canada.

More than 500 Best Buys in the United States and another 100 in Canada are included in the deal, as Microsoft is hoping to bring its latest products closer to buyers.

Yes this could be a very good thing to happen to M$ with customers telling them up in there face where to go. We may see some good changes in Windows and Xbox with customer satisfaction. M$ has not had to please its end users for some time now just its OEMs.

I was listening to the Windows Weekly podcast, and apparently the MS stores are going to be basically "the computer dept" going forward in these best buy stores. The Apple areas and the Samsung areas are going to be "pushed out" along the sides of the store. So, the MS stuff is going to be prominent front and center with Apple taking a backseat. Apparently MS paid a small fortune to Best Buy for this opportunity.

    I too like this idea.

I see it as MS reconnecting with the consumer in a more direct manner, that has been lost over the long term. Hopefully they will have MS MVPs staffing the counters that are truly experts and in the same vein if not better than the Fruit Company "geniuses" LOL.

Hate brick and mortar stores all you want, HOWEVER, they offer the consumer a good opportunity to actually see feel touch and use the item they are considering purchasing which simply will NEVER be replicated with online purchasing.

Best Buy has been going downhill for a long time now, but it seems like the founder is finally interesting in taking the reigns again and making it a place you want to shop at.

I like the fact that if I buy something expensive and have a problem with it I can simply take it back for service or a refund without all the mail/shipping hassle.

The store-within-a-store sites, which will be 1,500 square feet to 2,200 square feet, will offer a wide selection of Windows tablets and PCs, Windows Phones, Microsoft Office, and Xbox consoles. There will also be space set aside specifically for Microsoft's Surface tablet computers.
The deal also calls for more than 1,200 Best Buy sales staff to receive Microsoft training, in addition to the Microsoft specialists already on staff at Best Buy.

Best Buy is probably not the best Distrib they could have chosen - Their Geek Squad is INEPT and the subject of MANY lawsuits. I have heard many horror stories of people bringing their PCs in for problems that could have been easily fixed by me for less than 40 bucks, and they were charged over 300 bucks for works that was not even done. In one case, a professional shopper was made to buy a new hard drive, and they were charged about 300 bucks. They tried to give him a different original hard drive back, one that WAS bad, but it wasn't his. The Computer was brought in with something rigged to be easily fixed by any legit Tech, the person who "repaired" the PC never even tried to use that method, which was something like the simple restoration of a system file or something.

That Microsoft chose this company to host their stores is ALARMING to say the least. It is evidence of Unethical Behaviour- Microsoft has already generally lied to the general purchasing public about the "official" amount of actual versions of Windows 8 being used in the world.

I think it is evidence of desperation on MS's part - And that Windows 8 is possibly suffering even worse sales than is being let on. I understand why a company wold do this, to try to save a Product, but in my opinion, only HONEST methods will work. MS should come clean with the actual number of machines which are calling for updates, and I guarantee that this number is sufficiently less than 100 Million. They admit this, and then release 8.1 WITH a Working and Windows 7 style Start Menu, their customers WILL come flocking back in droves.

But someone at MS who is deciding what features they will PUSH is refusing to listen to what the public WANTS. Microsoft needs to realise that Windows 8 has failed, Officially - Just like Vista failed officially. MS's response to the Vistdebacle was Windows 7. If they release Windows 8.1 without attending to these major complaints, they could possibly go out of business.

And this worries me, is there some political agenda going on with Windows 8? Microsoft seems to want to guarantee a No-Sale release of Windows.

At this point I have absolutely no interest in 8.1 - I think I'll wait for the next release. I'll stick with what I got and I'll install Windows 7 in even more machines, and still try to get at least ONE of my clients to install 8... But I have offered at least 25 times and it has been a solid "No WAY" across the board.

This is exactly what I mean when I say people who have a negative experience with a product tend to exaggerate and do everything to tell the world they hate the product.

Apple opens up a store and it's so cool. Samsung opens up a store in BB and wow it's a good strategy. But MS opening up a store in BB and it's doom and gloom.

    Nuff said.

Good Intentions - If Microsoft opened a store in Office Depot or even Walmart, I'd applaud it. But not Best Buy - I almost never shop there.

The point is there is no better proof of what I mean when I say people want to exaggerate their dislike of a product to a point of ridiculousness than this thread. Makes their opinion looks like caricaturized parody.

They don't like certain aspects of windows 8, and so they tell everyone that all of windows 8 is crap and that their dogs died because of it. Everything MS does now will reinforce this. And it's like they don't have a job, since they spend all their time calling one press conference after another telling people how much they hate MS and win8.

    It's getting beyond annoying.

Well, in this case it is Beast Buy, not Microsoft. They use all manner of unethical selling practices.

I went there to buy INK for a Lexmark. For an old printer, so the cartridges are usually a lot less then new cartridges, which can be as high as 60 bucks for a black ink cartridge. I found one in the SALE bin, marked down to 9 bucks. It SAID 9 bucks on it. They tried to charge me 60 bucks for it. Geek Squad uses the same unethical practices to dredge MONEY from people who don't have it. They charge at least 3 times as much for Hardware, Hard Drives and Video Cards. The place is BAD, BAD BAD.
