Analyst: Windows 8.1 Won’t Stop Microsoft’s Decline

Windows 8.1 is not only a major improvement for the current Windows 8 platform, but also another Microsoft attempt to secure the leading spot in the OS market.

Even though the Softies are still holding more than 91 percent of the desktop market, Ovum analyst Richard Edwards explains that Microsoft’s days of total domination are over and the new Windows 8.1 won’t stop this decline.

Analyst: Windows 8.1 Won?t Stop Microsoft?s Decline

Interesting comment from Bob O'Donell

IDC veep Bob O’Donnell had a similar message for Microsoft, arguing that the new Windows release would not be enough on its own to rejuvenate PC sales.

“I think Microsoft and Intel need to come together and focus on the core productivity benefits of PCs and not let them get distracted with trying to be all things to everyone,” he added.
“PCs are still better at many things than tablets and smartphones, but I think that message has been lost and needs to be revived in order to get people focused on the benefits that PCs offer.”

If such a decline would cause them to pay more attention to what we want, then perhaps it's for the best.

“Microsoft has the resources to ‘fix’ Windows 8, but it should realize that its days of almost total domination are now over. Diversity is now a fact-of-life within in the world of end user computing, with BYOD and BYOA redefining the corporate IT landscape.”

Maybe M$ will wake up soon I hope so I do not feel like learning a new OS.

What's wrong with you guys. That article is very factual. It is obvious that from where Microsoft is right now in market share it can only go downhill. There are many sharks out there that will try real hard to get a piece of the action.

The sharks are taking some big chunks of the mobile market and now they are looking at the PC market M$ is plenty worried.

To be honest, I hope 8.1 is an utter failure.

Windows 7 was Guaranteed Sales. Windows 8? Is not. If they improved Windows 7 to be as fast as 8 and released a Desktop Only OS, they would rise out of this sinkhole they have made for themselves. I'd be the first to install this if it came out.

Eventually I will get a Windows 8 Tablet, thats where the OS belongs.
