From what this article sounds like, Windows has two things to "Update" now - Previous Windows versions had no Metro to contend with. So any Upgrade from Windows 8 - If there are any, may save only the Desktop Apps, and Metro will be overwritten with a Tabla Rasa, a blank Slate.

It's because Windows 8 is actually two OS's in one.

That's about it! It just seems like MS has not figured out a way to upgrade the Metro side in such a way that your Apps can be saved - If it is anything like iOS, well this is how iOS acts - The Upgrade to a new iOS works best when you do a "restore" - I always lose all of my Apps when I upgrade my iOS. If you do an "OTA" (Over The Air) update, it will save all your apps, but when you have over 150 apps it takes a long time to update. What MS needs for Windows 8 Metro is an OTA-Style upgrade for the Metro Side - Maybe even a totally different disk to upgrade Metro- For instance, 8.1 will update ONLY the Desktop side. Then you run a separate update for Metro and that updates your Metro. That would have to be the only way a Windows 8 Upgrade could be pulled off and SAVE the Metro Apps.

    Hi there
current leaked builds are not the same as the one to be released in a few days time so I wouldn't pay any attention on how these behave.

Since these were "obtained in the wild" I didn't want to risk an "Update" on a Real machine -- also these leaked builds didn't have product keys so the whole activation thing is a moot point on these anyway -- they did say evaluation copy with some expiry date early in 2014.

I'm sure all these questions will be answered in a week or two.

As for Metro --shouldn't be too difficult to organise -- the store can just re-download and install again --however upgrading the OS doesn't mean that the apps have to be upgraded automatically -- when I upgraded Android on a smartphone the apps weren't automatically upgraded - however a lot of apps do check from time to time to see if there is a newer version on the Google Play store. Metro could work like that too -- automatically update when you are on the internet --can't see any technical issues with that process.

If you completely re-install Windows from scratch then you'll obviously have to re-install all your apps again metro and standard (apart from those that are shipped with the OS).

Same with Android smart phones -- if you factory re-set and re-install the OS all your apps will also be "wiped" unless you've backed them up to the Micro sd card (if you have one in your phone).

    Cheers

That's basically what I thought. I haven't even looked for a leaked build but was wondering how they worked and what you got. I'll be waiting until it shows up on TechNet. It sounds like the final release will be an update that you apply to your already installed and activated Windows 8 install. I'm fine with that, I was just curious as to how the ones in the wild worked.

The leaked build worked ok for me on a separate partition. Allows you play with the new features but it's not cracked to access the Store. Played with it, got rid of it, waiting for the upgrade. Cheers!

Droids can't backup your apps on a Computer like Apple allows you to do with apps in iTunes? Let me ask you this, do Droid Apps require a forced update? I would not want that, I use specific versions of Apps, like Pandora for instance, I have kept version 3.1.8 on my phone even though there have been MANY updates since then - I hate them all, 3.1.8 was the last one that allowed me to use my little modifications. Not saying what those are, so forget it. But the point is, I kept Facebook 3-something until they came out with 5, cos all version of 4.x were sucky sucky. I have about ten apps I refuse to update, because I like the way they work compared to the updated versions.

    I was thinking about this...

I'd really like to try the preview but the whole having to reinstall apps and programs when the real version comes out sucks.

If I make an image. then install the preview. then start installing more apps I find in the Windows Store during that preview time. then restore image before the official 8.1 comes out. won't there be inconsistency? my account will say I have all these apps installed (including the ones I picked up during the preview). but after the image wipes it out, my account still thinks I have those apps on my system even though my system actually has a smaller set of apps because of the older image. doesn't this introduce new problems?
