Why we'll see even more disk drive choice

Give me a 4 TB hard drive for under 100 dollars, I shall be glad!

Second source. For decades OEM buyers insisted on a second source for every product. This forced vendors to offer cookie-cutter products.

But now that disk drive manufacturing has been reduced to Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba, what is the point of having a second source? PC vendors just have to trust that they'll have enough drives - and if they don't, well, too bad.

Thank the 2011 Thai floods for that new-found realism.

I don't care WHO makes my Hard Drives, as long as they last at least 10 years or more. This used to be WD, now it seems to be Seagate.

WD and Seagate have been head to head for years, before that, the choices were Maxtor. Plextor, IBM, Toshiba, Hitachi, etc - Until Maxtor turned out a CHEAP 20 Gig 'Slim" case that was the WORST design ever, I bought 20 of these in 2002, ALL of them crashed hard within a year.

The other makes still make HD's on a smaller scale than WD and Seagate, but they ARE still there. People gravitate to a brand that appears to be reliable.

WD was reliable for years, until the 2010 Floods and their Asian factories were obliterated. Every WD Drive I have bought since then, well, they no longer offered that sold 5 YEAR Warranty, AND They doubled and tripled their prices. SO I moved to Seagate.
