Report: Windows Store reaches 80,000 Windows 8 app mark

A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft finally offered some official Windows 8 app numbers for the first time, stating there were over 70,000 apps available from the Windows Store. Now that the month of June has started, it looks like the number of apps in the store continues to increase at a rapid pace.

The third party MetroStore Scanner website, which offers a way to view the apps available on the Windows Store without having to have Windows 8 or RT installed, shows that there are currently 80,302 apps. That's not just a big increase from Microsoft's own numbers, it's also nearly 15,000 more than the 65,891 apps that were in the store on May 1st.

Not directed at you for you have insight, but you know "It's all about the apps, stupid". Right?! :p

And yet for some odd reason, five of the top ten apps on Windows 8 are app versions of websites... Never really understood why a facebook app is such a demanded thing on EVERY platform.
Yep, that's how i feel in general about these new Windows 8 apps? Facebook is a website, wikipedia is a website. I don't need a desktop version of the app installed, that needs to be patched, that is going to just consume small amounts of diskspace.

I can understand better if it's a 10 inch touchscreen and looks like also 8 inch touchscreens, but I would imagine I would just go back to the actual Desktop website. I don't know, I would need to use such a small touchscreen like that to verify that. All I know is that from my time using the Surface RT, I went more on the actual website of facebook and youtube than the app, but that was before MetroTube came out though.

My thing though with apped websites is that if they can deliver a better experience than the actual website, it is useful. The Bing apps for example, apped websites. The Bing News site isn't EVEN CLOSE to the News app on Windows 8. Bing Weather the exact same story, they're way better.

I'll quote someone that this made me think of...

"DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!!! Yeah!"

At the moment, I'm not too motivated to post on here what those apps are once they are published. I'm an engineer and amateur dev. I'm writing these apps strictly for engineering students and engineers. They're tools in engineering. I started writing them because I noticed a complete lack of structure engineering apps.

So, you can imagine that the design and feel of the apps won't be as impressive as the ones made by honest to god developer. I know the first one I'm publishing will look really lame. It's a minimalist design. We have a saying here in the field. If everything were to be left to engineers, all buildings and structures would just be giant cubes.

This is why we have architects and designers. :)

The other five are games, communication, content consumption, and some content creating.
Adobe Photoshop Express storms to second of most popular free Windows 8 apps - Neowin

Adobe Photoshop Express is on Windows 8.

The Twitter or Facebook apps can give you instant notifications about mentions or tags, without them you'll have to either keep an eye on the website or wait for an email or text message to get notified ;)
