Hi there
Those sorts of Stats can mean anything -- Most used OS this month -- By whom -- developers in Ms labs etc.

It's about as meaningful as saying if you attend a Football match at Old Trafford in Manchester (Man Utd's home ground) then the vast majority in the ground will be Man Utd fans which is completely different to saying the vast majority of Football fans world wide support Man Utd (although it often seems like that !!).

If I use say XP at work for a month but use W8 on say 5 computers at home -- what am I USING more -- XP or W8. You can't certianly equate number of installations to amount of use. 8 Hrs a day at work or possibly a few evenings at home -- no contest even though I'm using MORE computers at home.

I often think on these boards I ought to run a FREE basic Statistics 101 tutorial. !!!

Cheers

Pretty simple, it was in the article, by the rate Windows 8 has grown in May and if it continues in June; it will become the third most used Windows platform according to Net Applications.

Your simile makes no sense and doesn't really apply to this.

It is simple, the current rate of Windows 8 growth at the expense of previous Windows versions will make it more used by everyone who connects to the internet with it.

I'm optimistic that what's been mentioned as features of 8.1 will make things better for a fair number of users. I welcome the changes that they have talked about. Some won't be happy but say la vie, to each his own. The issue of no classic start menu is a contentious issue that isn't going to go away any time soon. That debate looks to become a never ending story.

It's beyond comprehension, when 87.1%, (XP + Vista + W7), are using a legacy start button and menu, and work from the traditional desktop ... and only 4.27% have embraced W8 ... why M$ refuse to restore the last missing piece of the puzzle, meaning the Start Menu ... not just a meaningless start button.

They have acknowledged that users want a direct boot to desktop ... meaning they're not interested in Modern start menu. But then contradict the choice given by direct boot to desktop ... by assuming they want to go back to Modern?

They just don't get it that many users don't use/want Modern or M$ Apps or cloud.

Yeah, sure, by all means promote a tablet/smart phone set-up ... but offer traditional users what they want. What have they got to lose! It's already dead in the water?

I guess the only thing that can possibly get through to M$ marketing is when W8 dies on the vine.

If I may offer an opinion..

It seems that despite all the hype that M$ aren't really listening, they are trying to create the illusion that they are. They don't seem to have strayed very far from the original vision of W8 being a multi-homed OS.

Having looked at the list of features offered for W8.1 I must say that there is absolutely nothing compelling to make me change from Windows 7. Indeed, my initial reaction was "more of the same rubbish".

Without Aero, the start button going to a non-fullscreen start menu and boot to desktop I would not even consider a move. Well, for production PCs at least. I do have one here that I use as a test system for the W8 customers I have to support (and they are few and far between), and a W8 VM for tinkering.

As they say "Lies, damned lies and stats"... Stats can be made to mean anything.. and sadly often mean little or nothing.

@Tanyac Well said! :ditto:

The most fundamental principle of marketing is to cater to consumer wants and needs. Not vice versa.

This was the reason why General Motors Holden had such huge success in it's first entry in the car market in Oz back in 1954 with the introduction of the FJ Holden.

What's stunning is that despite what common business sense, history, and logic would tell you MS stubbornly refuses to "give the people what they want".

Obviously MS has NOT actually internalized the business case of "New Coke".

I have heard them sneer at the analogy but it still applies to even MS product. If you refuse to give the customer what they want, they will bury you.

I think the New Coke story is applicable too because you had a iconic traditional soft drink that everyone loved and had many loyal fans...then because of some misguided focus group study by some equally misguided consulting agency the CCC devised an answer to a question absolutely NO customer ever asked....think about it. The difference is that the Coca Cola Company reacted quickly to the customer uproar and moved swiftly to offer what the customer wanted once again. So while there was some grumbling in the end all was forgiven.

Windows 8 To Surpass Windows Visa Market Share In June

I don't know WHERE they are getting these figures - From STEAM? I don't see that as a viable way to see how many people are using it. The best way would be to make a POLL and run it on MS websites day and night. Simply ASK the public, what OS they are using.

But to compare Windows 8 to VISTA? Why are they not comparing it to Windows 7? Because, in the Real World - I have not SEEN a Vista installation in over 2 years - Except for my Emachines eTower that was given to me - And the reason WHY it was given to me? Nobody WANTED it, despite it being installed on a fast system- A Fast system that was NOT Fast until I upgraded it to Windows 7.

Seems like these Microsoft Statistics guys are trying to jump Hurdles, HUGE Hurdles, you CANNOT compare Windows 8 adoption rates to VISTA without Windows 7 being in that equation!

Hahaha! Don't tell Coke Robot about New Coke hahaha! He'll pour himself down your throat! hehe.

But, really, how much of a PUBLIC outrage ensued with "New Coke" - Well, it was SO significant that they HAD to put out Coke Classic almost instantly or face Death as a Business and sell out to Pepsi in short order!

I guess this explains the 100% resistance I have witnessed against Windows 8 - People perceive it as New Coke. I feel it is up to ME, to you guys, to all of us in here, to quell that comparison at it's source, because the more people use that New Coke analogy, the less people will actually go out and Buy Windows 8.

I'll have to poll my clients, see if they feel that way. That's a hard image to fight, New Coke had so big of an impact that it is now a Historical reference on to how to lose money.

well i think that most users do not want to spent all the money on Vista, then Win 7, then Win 8.....for many people this costs to much.

then you have Office 2007, 2010 and now 2013, same thing.....more money.

And when one has 3 or more pc' s at home, it is really getting expensive.

It is going to fast financially.

As for the start button.....well .....

We shall see if MS have done enough with the new os (8.1) to have any effect on pc sales. Perhaps the new os will be the less off putting to potential buyers.

It might seem strange MS didn't offer options to the users, as in the dos to gui transition. Users found gui to be preferable and chose it.

MS fear users users will not prefer the metro madness, and will not choose it.

Therefore, MS do not offer a choice. They tried force with 8. It failed, now they are trying stealth with 8.1.

Tablet sales are a different matter. I wouldn't be surprised if they could get a much better position there - distant 3rd.

Seems Microsoft is - But Not US.

Look, M$ is trying to say that VISTA is still out there being used! It's NOT, I GUARANTEED you! the "3rd Used OS" my blue Butt - They are using the Figures they INFLATED in 2007 to "Prove" that - I think it was also "100 Million" people had BOUGHT Vista!

If this were true back then, then every 4th Computer IN THE WORLD would have Vista on it! But, as we know this is far from the case.

Even in 2007, with Vista in Full Swing - It was Rare to find Vista installed. And when I was found, I was the one being asked if I would KINDLY delete the f00k out of it and install XP or in some cases, 2000!

There are two OS's which I have never ever been asked to install to a client's PC or Laptop - Windows Millennium, and Vista.

Windows 8 is rapidly becoming the THIRD never-asked-for-OS. This is really making me sad, too, because Windows 8 is in NO WAY the same class of very bad ideas and blatant mistakes that those two OS's were.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
They tried force with 8. It failed, now they are trying stealth with 8.1.

So the fact that MS announced months before releasing W8 that they were going to have more frequent updates to the OS, starting with the first this year is just MS trying to 'stealth'?

4% in half a year is not great but still better than OSX's 7% in 12 years, soon to be surpassed by W8.
