Linux Guru: Microsoft Is Doing the Right Thing with Window

Might seem odd coming from Mark. Quite generous of him to say that. The kind of guy he is.

Interesting that Ubuntu Unity was before 8, and much of what you see in 8 will be familiar to Unity users.

It works better in Ubuntu of course.

On the other hand, he may be secretly pleased MS is doing themselves damage trying to force this phone ui onto users.

Personally, I'm getting tired of 'the cloud' talk. It's becoming an over used phrase. Yes, it does add some benefits but also less control and privacy. I've had friends who bought something in Google market or through iTunes that were either screwed up and they lost everything they had on their PC/Apple/Android that was saved due to security issues or because the terms were changed after a purchase. We are getting to the point where we don't own anything, and everything we have is under control of a business that might not have my best interest in mind

How do you mean might not have? They have their own interests in mind. Ours don't count - unless it affects their bottom line.

I'm using a lot more cloud stuff these days. I have more of a need for data in multiple places than I do concerns about privacy or loss of my data.

For example
1). I use dropbox and skydrive. It's more or less a backup, as the files are synced to my computers...so even if they lose it all, I still have it. In the event I lose it all, I have an offsite copy of my data.
2). gmail: no more do I have to bother with backing up a PST when I switch computers, and I can access 100% of my email from any device with a web browser. Downtime hasn't been an issue for me, gmail is extremely reliable.
3). google sync: I use Chrome and my bookmarks are all synced with my google account. No need to save any bookmarks, as they are in my account and conveniently on every single machine that I use, tablets included.
4). Amazon MP3. It took me a long time to move to digital music, but the prices have been good, and it's DRM free and you can download and re-download any song you want however often you want. If you are limited on storage space, you can stream from the cloud to your device. I can have up to 10 devices on my account, so I can keep music on my phone, my wife's phone, my computer, etc. And I download all of the music to my home file server, so in the event that Amazon decided to rip the rug out from under me, I still have all of my music.

Having access to my data no matter where I am is becoming more and more normal. Having an offsite copy of my data in the event of fire, theft or other disaster is certainly appealing. For things that are private, I use Box Cryptor, TrueCrypt or KeePass to store them...or a combination of technologies.

Well, I've been in a recent private discussion about this - In the last Year, Microsoft has merged almost all of their "services" into Skydrive - SO now, it is a service as useful as iCloud. In fact, all of my iCLoud backups are appearing in my Skydrive folders. Microsoft did something RIGHT with this move, and also something better than what Apple has done. Offering only 5 GB of Cloud Storage for a 64 GB iPhone is simply not enough - Once a week I get Popups on my iPhone that my CLOUD is full and I have to delete pictures, which is the one thing that keeps getting bigger and bigger. So I send them to Skydrive automatically, that way I can delete em from iCloud without any loss.

But as tiresome it is to keep hearing about Cloud this and Cloud that - This is a direction that IT was going towards even before iCloud came into existence - Google Drive existed as a "Tweak" you could preform on your gMail account. You'll notice the spread of the Lower-Case first letter into many MS Store apps and even Droid apps.

Yes, with only 5 GB of iCloud storage space, you HAVE to use Dropbox, Skydrive, gDrive, eVernote, etc etc and etc.

Or you can pay Apple the 100 bucks annually for what - 50 GB of storage?

But now, even apple agrees to interface with these services. Google Drive is a good service but the worst app ever made - It's BAD. But I use Skyjos "Gdrive" which is a much better way to access Google Drive.

Yeah, I don't use iCloud. 95% of the time I use Dropbox, I have the free account, but have 5.4GB of free space after referrals. I keep skydrive around because I'm under the grandfathered 25GB freebie account. I only have 2Mbps upload at home, so I don't store a ton in any of these things. My dropbox account is mostly text files, I'm using something like 5% of the total storage space. I have approx 10GB in Skydrive I think.

Google Drive is a good service but the worst app ever made - It's BAD. But I use Skyjos "Gdrive" which is a much better way to access Google Drive.
Yeah, most have left a bit to be desired. For the longest time Skydrive didn't have a recycle bin, or ability to recover accidentally deleted files. In addition, you couldn't selectively sync folders....< thankfully they fixed both of those things. The 1 thing they need is a bandwidth throttle as I don't want it to saturate my upload speeds, but that feature is missing. Dropbox has that feature and that's awesome, but it's 5GB of free storage (for me) versus 25GB (for me) with Skydrive...so space is limited.

I'm triple booting 7, 8 and recently installed Mint 15 RC with a triple shared partition for personal files.
Still use skydrive's 25 GB space for random backups.

As far as Im concerned they are all great OSs however I LOVE how FAST my boot time and shutdown times have come to be on Mint compared to W7 or 8. Keep in mind Im barely running a Turion dual core 2.1 with 4 GB ram DV5.
I can ONLY IMAGINE how much faster it would run on a newer hardware ...

Not really, the Guru is Mark Shuttleworth, the man behind Ubuntu, who have gone down a similar path to WIN 8 with the Unity Interface that works across the different form factors. They have annoyed a lot of their users as well.

Linux Mint is a nice system. Worked straight out of the box for me - picked up on all my Samsung laptop hardware bits, set up the HP printer from the W7 desktop but I've also heard that's not always the case. That has always been the attraction of a Windows system. If hardware doesn't work immediately then there's soon a driver written for it.

Now if only Linux would run the Windows programs I use without the bother of setting a virtual machine on it. I'm talking about the Adobe stuff which I use regularly. Everything else I can get by on happily. Maybe though the Linux community are just too fragmented to start to really work together. If they did then......

In other words, just drive already Linux using (full or part time users) that either do IT work or some such from Windows to Linux.

So basically, just get the H8ers onto Linux. ;)

Mark Shuttleworth is the guy "responsible" for Unity.

He is therefore also responsible driving some (many?) established Ubuntu users to other distros (like Linux Mint).
