Either way they are trying to get them to sell. It looks to be nice hardware but I can't help but think its too good for what it is, a tablet. At those prices I think a lot of people will look at full sized laptops or maybe even an Ultrabook. Do you really need specs like that for media consumption? Assuming that's all most people will do with something that only has a 10 inch screen? I'd like to see them go AMD like they did with the Xbox One. A device with better battery life and a lower price may appeal to some buyers. An 11 or 12 inch screen would appeal to me more than a 7 inch screen. But what do I know, I dare say I'm out of the loop on stuff like this. I know what I want though.
This is a fantastic buy right now and i'd get one myself to complement my Pro if I really wanted to just have a second, lighter choice for pure web browsing.
Technically, I could get one for @ $250 after I get it and sell one of the keyboards.
With the new 8.1 features and smaller form factors, this is going to be an exciting months to come for MS and us.
If they give people the option to buy a less expensive version I think it will work out better for them. I'm not talking RT here, I mean a less expensive version of the Surface Pro. More versions with varying specs and power. I'd like to see one with an AMD APU in it.

Problem with the surface is it's just TOO expensive compared with some much better 'specced and flexible laptops. I'm not sure of the economics of this business but I for one can't imagine doing any sort of spread sheets or power point work on a 7 inch screen so an RT is out for me as it will be for a lot of other people too.
I'm also not paying around 1,000 USD for a thin piece of glass which has less capability than a 400 USD laptop - and unlike a laptop it's the devils own job to either swap the disks for larger faster models like the new 500 GB SSD's and the upcoming (affordable finally) 1 TB SSD's or even up the RAM to 16 GB. IF you add a keyboard and a mouse you are talking well over 1,000 USD (including TAX). - Sorry Ms but there are a lot of other options at that price even though the actual Surface product looks good.
