Windows Blue hides 4K display support, tons of new feature

For all the controversy surrounding Windows 8, it's a solid OS under the hood. And based on a list of API clues discovered by a former Nokia and Silverlight developer, it should only get better with the Windows Blue update.

Based on an extensive examination of the software APIs found within Windows Blue (now offically called Windows 8.1 by Microsoft), developer Justin Angel compiled a lengthy list of more than 25 features that he says will be included in the updated OS: the possibility of ultra-HD "4K" screen support, lock-screen calls, HDR photo support, better multi-screen formatting, and much more.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing.

Decided not to touch these leaked builds but can't wait to get an official release in my hands. Everything I have read and heard tells it's going to be quite an experience, especially if you already the 8 as I do.

I kind of want to see picture backgrounds on the Start Screen. Honestly, it just add more richness to it than anything, and considering there will be baby tiles; more of the background will be seen I would bet than right now.

So excited for baby tiles though! :dinesh: And HUGE tiles! A lot of possible potential lies with a huge tile, it could allow it to be a little more "widgety" with music players. The app tile could have playback controls.

I too, haven't touched a leaked build. I don't mind waiting for an official release. I honestly hope I don't end up being as disappointed with 8.1 as I was with 8.0. It sounds like they at least tried to address some of the short comings of the Metro UI. Well stuff that I consider a short coming anyway. 4k touchscreen? You win the lotto?

I can.

One, because they're touch, for which I have no need, use or desire, so won't countenance the price premium (which there will be).

Two, because here in Oz, they'd cost you your first-born child. :(

Hi there
Why can't Ms understand that a fixed split screen ratio of whatever proportions is TOTALLY USELESS for traditional desktop type applications where you might need a VARIABLE number of open windows all to be open at the same time. Being aple to re-size these windows dynamically also as at present is a requirement as well -- fixed sizes don't allow you either to get the best resolution with your screens either.

Ms definitely needs to recognize that running a Mobile phone interface on a large 60 CM screen WILL NOT CUT IT even if the displays are hung drawn and quartered.

The other things I can live with -- I don't need a start button and one can arrange the applications a bit - although it would be nice to have user selectable icons for the tiles when classical windows apps are installed.

The Install procedure for standard apps also needs to be fixed so every little .exe file DOESN'T generate its own tile like it does now.

Cheers
jimbo

Yes, am having this problem (as does many w8 users, example) on a couple of laptops. Shows up all over, but IE10 is mostly affected, makes it unusable.

Ms definitely needs to recognize that running a Mobile phone interface on a large 60 CM screen WILL NOT CUT IT even if the displays are hung drawn and quartered.

Yes x2, I can't understand that they (MS) don't understand!

Generally, let's hope MS comes up with some changes for the better. They can do whatever they want to implement more of their metro stuff if they wish to, as long as they at the same time improve on the 'traditional' desktop workspace as well, and as an absolute minimum, restores normal function without need for add-on programs.

With 8.1, let's hope MS does it right this time.

If I can ever afford a 4K screen, any fingers getting close to it are going to get cut off.

I think Panasonic showed off a 4K touchscreen with I think an Autodesk or AutoCAD running on it. Wow, the thing looked like it was real paper it was so crisp. I want my touchscreen for CAD and Photoshop purposes.

I usually leave the live tiles on large and Desktop apps as the are tile size since those can't be changed yet. I'm pretty excited that 8.1 will allow that because I can consolidate my middle portion of the Start Screen down into like a whole 2x5 column, except it won't be 10 tiles, it'll be more like 40 baby tiles in what used to take 10. So yes!
