End of Support for Windows 2000, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista RTM

Back in October 2009 we talked about upcoming dates for end of support for certain Windows XP and Windows Vista versions. Those dates are getting closer and this is the time to remind customers running these versions that there is a need to take an action.

If you or someone you know is running Windows Vista with no services packs installed (also known as Windows Vista RTM or SP0), please use Windows Update to install the latest service pack available – Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (note you’ll need to install Service Pack 1 first). We also recommend checking out our latest Windows release – Windows 7. On April 13th, 2010, Windows Vista RTM will reach the end of support.

And on July 13th, 2010, all versions of Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2 will also reach the end of support. We recommend those of you still on Windows XP SP2 to install the latest service pack available via the Microsoft Update website – Windows XP Service Pack 3 – or look at moving to Windows 7. Folks still on Windows 2000 will need to look at moving to a more current version of Windows, such as Windows 7.

For more information on the end of support for these Windows releases, see this blog post on the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Blog. This post also provides guidance for businesses of all sizes. Or you can visit this page on Windows.com.

Keeping your PC up to date and as safe as possible is something that people need to think about beyond just being on the latest service pack. I want to remind everyone of the benefits of keeping Windows Update turned on. Through Windows Update, not only are you provided with the latest security updates and service packs for Windows at no cost, but also the latest updates to products such as Internet Explorer 8 and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Aside from those using Pirated copies, why the hell would anyone still be using Vista sans Service packs?

Was thinking the same when my eye caught this on Seven Forums:

If you have a legitimate version of W7, then you should have nothing to worry about. At the moment, this update is optional but in due course it will be automatically installed.

How will it be come auto if you don't do updates. I feel it is my right to install what updates I want and not Microsoft. I still have a computer with Vista on it without sp1 or sp2 on it and not most of the updates and not having any problems. Most of the updates are a joke. You know everybody if Billy Boy didn't charge high prices for his software more people would by it and not try to steal it.

So far I did the update last week on my main computer with no problems. I have another computer doing updates but not that one. To see how long it will take Microsoft to tell me I have to this update so I can do future updates. That is why more an more people hate Microsoft and are going to linux. If it wasn't for the games I would have been running linux ten years ago. Plus it is free I can run linux on as many computers with the same copy, you can't do that with Billy Boy's.

There are some people who believe if it isnt broken dont fix it. We have several notable guru's still using vista w/o service pack applied.

It is always sad to see some OS go out of vogue, albeit it is the way of the world. XP SP3 is on it last legs, and by 2014 Seven and whatever the next Windows OS is going to be called will be on top. By 2015 Windows Seven will be the next OS to fall. Hence, boys and girls; ladies and gentleman the world will continue on, regardless of what we think. And, if you are a Linux user you will still only have about 2% of desktops, and still be telling the world how great it is and that it won't be long until it wins the OS wars. . .have a nice day computing.

It is sad but as with everything, their time has past. No one can expect these OS's to be supported forever.
XP came out 8 years and 4 months ago.

Anyone can still use it, if they want to.
I'm sure many people will continue using them for many years to come.

I guess I could say that I skipped Vista. Mostly because I was working a missionary for the years that Vista was out and had no computer access.

I've used all Windows versions, as well as DOS, but XP is the one I know not so well. I have never understood this anti-Vista movement. I had Vista Ultimate on several rigs, private and work, and I never had any problems. For me the big unknown was XP, I was a devoted Linux user until I tried early Vista beta and fell in love.

It's definitely incredible how Vista RTM will loose support out of Windows XP SP2, by being the latter even a older release. Well, it seems that XP's still ruling these days.
