Why Microsoft won't charge for Windows 'Blue' & this time

Analysts believe Microsoft won't dare charge for this year's update to Windows 8, but one is certain it will for future annual releases

I don't think MS will get away with charging existing 8 users this time.

You can bet future releases will be charged - at this point I would guess $29.99-39.99.

Your link is a bit odd

I wonder what kind of time frame there will be between "updates"? Managing patches could be a pain if they do a lot in a short time. Especially if people don't buy into it or don't want or need what that update offers. Then you'll get into, do I need to pony up for update 1 or 2 to get 3?

You don't get charged on android for a 4.xx update, neither ios (with exception of a new iphone) nor Windows Phone for a mere .xx update.

    The same follows for Windows.

I have a feeling that 8.2 will cost.

You don't get charged on android for a 4.1.2 update, neither ios with 6.1.2 (with the exception of a new iphone) nor Windows Phone for a mere .xx update.

We also don't know if 8.2 and 8.3 will be what Microsoft does. My guess is not. More like 8.5 next year, then Windows 9.

The Windows 8.1 preview version that will be delivered in June will be available for anyone to download and test drive, not just developers.

Meh... Microsoft is the same boat that Apple was with their release of Mac OS X 10.0
It was the first release of a new OS with a new UI concept and it was slow, full of bugs and Mac user were quite disapointed and angry. Apple gave 10.1 away for free for the same reasons that MS will do.
