XP - One Year To Go

Hi there
I'll still need it for a LONG LONG time yet -- I run XP as a VM and will continue to do so. I have a load of VERY EXPENSIVE legacy Engineering type hardware as well as an old HP plotter and a load of architectural and blue printing equipment. All this hardware runs perfectly fine on a VM and some of the original manufacturers have long since gone out of business. - This type of equipment is "Battleship Build quality" and is often the sort of equipment that will be in use for 30 - 40 years or more.

There's loads of other types of gear --such as specialized lab equipment / monitoring gear / whatever-- . A lot runs on dedicated systems so Internet access and security upgrades aren't a concern.

Don't expect XP to go away quickly even when official support ends.

(Incidentally -- also a bit of nostalgia --I have a couple of Minidisc systems too -- still work perfectly on an XP VM).

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there

...."YOU WILL COMPLY ....YOU WILL BE ABSORBED -- RESAISTANCE IS FUTILE" -- SevenOfNine in Star trek circa 1996

Same message for Windows 8 --Microsoft 2013.

I think I prefer to be persuaded by SevenOfNine rather than Ms. !!!

Seven of nine . . . That's one person who could persuade me to install Windows 8. ;) I'll put T'pol on that list too.

Agreed. All our lab equipment are run by xp. As far as I know, most expensive engineering equipment are still run by xp. I doubt anyone will care if it will get support or not.

There's still stuff out there running on NT4 for similar reasons. It's not that it's going to go away (although if consulting requests are to be a barometer, it'll severely decline in the next 12 months in mainstream corporate environments), it's just going to stop being supported.

An operating system that initially not many liked due to the UI became the operating system that has become a thorn in the maker's side to this VERY day still. It's old, it's gross looking, its password was "password" as its security issues were rampant, and should have died years ago.

Glad it's going to be killed officially.

Yet interestingly enough, when Bill Gates left Microsoft as CEO, he introduced the HP built Windows xp Tablet PC Edition to the world. Move literally a decade later, Microsoft reintroduces the Windows 8 Tablet PC again with THEIR own Surface tablets running an OS of which its UI is a similar talking point to xp's.

Hi there
A Huge amount of Engineering / other specialized equipment runs on essentially a dedicated system. The OS UI is totally irrelevant in the majority of this type of use -- the application simply controls the appearance and runs straight from boot. Often the operators never SEE the basic desktop - the OS could be ANYTHING underneath for all they care.

This type of operation doesn't depend on OS updates / security considerations or whether the OS is even supported any more. These type of systems used to be known as "Turnkey Systems" (not to be confused with a TURKEY system which some people think W8 is).

These old XP systems will I'm sure OUTLAST W8 and probably W9 or whatever it will be called as well.

This type of gear will run quite easily also on a VM so even if the old computer breaks the old XP system will still run.
You can run a VM as a batch process so the newer system would operate essentially in "Kiosk mode" and as far as the operator of the equipment is concerned there would be no difference at all in the operating procedures.

Cheers

So if I try to install XP again on one of my notebooks after 8 Apr 2014, it won't install?

It's not just High-End Plotting and Architectural systems, but Automotive as well - You know those racks they have in the auto shops? Well those have a small Dell Workstation to control the hydraulics. Even brand new Lifts are sold with these Old Dell Blue-Gray flat Boxes, dedicated systems, made with XP cos it WORKS.

These systems will not be made with Windows 8 - They MAY be made with 7 in them.

That's because we have our share of idiots. As to the date format, it was the standard in England when this continent was being colonized, the same way the imperial measurement system was. We still officially use both of these less-common (at least as far as the rest of the world goes) to this day, although it's slowly becoming more common to see metric in measurements in certain things, as well as the more standardized ISO 8601 way of writing dates. Also, as globalization has had an impact on business, a lot of us who work in cross-global organizations have learned to use ISO dates and metric measurements.

I have plenty of nasty things to say about how MS handled the release and configuration of Windows 8...however this is tempered by the fact that a for profit business was considerate enough to keep XP humming along for all these years. Essentially XP owners that bought their OS in 2001 have had FREE support (via updates for almost 13 years now.

This is why I will favor MS over the stupid fruit company. Of course their "geniuses" seem to lose their touch once they put their fingers on something non-Apple...

Witness SVP "genius" Ron Johnson...the now former CEO of JC Penny's . The thick headed and arrogant MBA thought that he could force the customer to bend to his will alone. LOL The customers quickly sent him and the iconic company a very expensive lesson.

Ron Johnson Really Is Destroying JC Penney - Business Insider

The benevolence of how MS handed XP (at their expense) is the one thing that keeps me willing to wait for MS to come to their senses, and put Windows 8 right by offering the customer the default option to boot straight to the desktop.
That being said I have started using Linix Mint which is very good.

The main reason XP had such a long life was because of its corporate penetration. When Microsoft announced that it was dropping support for XP a few years ago, it caused a mighty backlash from the corporate world, so Microsoft gave XP a life extension to allow time for corporations to transition to Windows 7. Consumer concerns didn't enter into this decision.
