Windows Blue & Desktop death nonsense explained

Updated: April 29, 2013
Several weeks ago, an alpha-quality release of Microsoft Windows Blue was accidentally leaked on purpose to the Web, to create a pre-buzz buzz. Everyone and their mother rushed to join the whorefest, recycling the few screenshots of what appears to be nothing more than a glorified service pack for the failure called Windows 8. I did not participate in the orgy, but now it's time for my little input.

As it turns out, the copypasta fever also had another component - a fresh new conspiracy claiming the inevitable death of the desktop. The reasoning? The Start menu is not coming back, and more functionality has been merged into the Modern Metro whatever interface. So everyone started talking about death, death, death. And now let me explain things.

[h=2]The claim[/h] So, the pundits who seek attention so, by posting inflammatory and deliberately dramatic topics backed up by fictitious would-be claims and hyperbole, would want you to believe that the desktop will vanish, with the release of Windows 9, and that we will all be happily living in a Minority Report kind of Utopia, using our left and right hands for an enhanced touch experience, which goes beyond the keyboard, mouse, paper and pen, and circlejerking. This is not going to happen. Plain and simple. Now, let's be more specific.

Wow, that guy NAILED it!

It is nice to know that there are still MANY rational folks out there that have a good deal of common sense.

I love how he mentioned that comment about the "Metrosexual" IU....

HAHAHAHAHA!

[h=3]Tape vs. CD player[/h]Here we have identical functionality. Even so, it took almost 30 years for the tape to fully vanish and the CD to become the media of choice, for listening and recording sound. The important fact is, nothing changed in the core element of the problem at hand.

Actually, I still USE tape quite a bit. Lots of sound engineers do, they use it to record Drum Tracks. It sounds better. But then they digitise the sound and import it into Pro Tools. I even still use cassettes - Cos my old 4-Track uses them as masters. Eventually everything does end up on my hard drive, but those tapes, I've got a massive file cabinet filled with stuff I recorded as far back as 1980.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I never really understood why people actually do claim that the Desktop UI of Windows will be gone very soon, within a release cycle. That doesn't make sense to as there are millions upon millions of pieces of software that runs on the Win32 code of the Desktop. A switchover from Win32 to WinRT will take serious time. A good decade at least will have to pass before the Desktop UI can be officially be dead. The top programs will need to be coded into WinRT, the WinRT app standards will need to be redefined, and touch interaction methods will have to be improved. (For freaking crying out loud, you use a bloody stylus for precise input with touch!) The transition from CRT to LCD monitors took well over a decade for it being standard. The transition from LCD to touch panels will take a long time as well.

It will also take a thinking out of the box so to speak about how to optimize a workflow in modern standards once this happens. Example, you can't use a touchscreen with a desktop PC as you have a nontouch LCD monitor. To claim it is not ergonomic in that situation is akin to saying driving is difficult when you're trying to drive a semi truck for the first time ever when you always drive a sedan.

Wondered how long it would be before someone linked to Dedo.

I resisted it as some might not understand the style and/or lack any sense of humour:

The only question is, will humans accept this regression?

...And this is why tablets and smartphones look the way they do, and why morons prefer them.

...This is why touch technology looks childish and simplistic and borrowed from Idiocracy

...Which tells us why the touch only proponents are full of ****.

For example.

That doesn't invalidate his points.

There was no intention of doing so. I felt it was admirable that a staunch Linux supporter should be blogging a reasonable view of Windows 8. He is not openly criticising the Os, but pointing out it's (few) shortfalls. As a dual OS, which is how I see it, I remain with no complaints, regarding the othet half I choose to use - the legacy desktop, with a one touch graphical start menu.

I think the main point of his article was that bloggers were "running wild".
His article about Firefox was similar.

I think you might have a few bits from the article, Dave, like these:

...there's one reason why a company like Microsoft would want to ...have you move to the subscription-based model like they supposedly plan with Windows Blue. Money.

....Now, this is going to fail... because Microsoft is ignoring the human needs and focusing on technology, which is the expected kneejerk reaction from a company pressed into a corner by its own arrogant decisions

Hi.
I can see that members may view my posts on the subject of Microsoft/Windows 8, as regarding me as a MS "fanboy".
That is fair comment, but far from the truth. I have tackled MS, a little more directly, through their own TechNet and MVP pages. I don't pull punches, but have, in spite of that, always had fair and reasoned exchanges with them.

I find the desktop alternative approach of Windows 8 very comfortable to use and, as said, have no outstanding critism of it, over and above what I have similarly faulted in previous OSs. It got a bad name, right from the start, because of the controversial new style, and its early release, as a preview, to the non tech public. That shadow has hung over it since. This could include the author of the thread subject, with respect to the gentleman, he does not appear to be totally familiar with Windows 8.. His main, and only, blue concern, seems to be with use of a finger as opposed to a keyboard. With this I heartily agree. I cannot see the vast typewriting public using a touchscreen to type letters for the boss! As an aside, who the heck ever dreamed up square icons for finger control!!!

The vast majority of comments I read these days, on forums such as this, seem to be focused on the touchscreen/"Metro" implications. Very little of substance, is spoken regarding the desktop use. In fact, even on this site, I have read comments such as " why install Windows 8 and try and turn it into Windows 7". IMO, that is precisely how it was intended - not to turn it into Windows 7, but to make it more useable for those who prefer an "old tricks" desktop.
As such, I find it an advance in performance and usability - not much, but enough. After all, at this stage, and with current known technology, there is little more that can be done to speed up and improve any OS. The much lauded Linux has not, again imo, moved forward very much at all over the years. My feeble attempts to run the various flavours over the years, have all turned out boring and frustrating.
nevertheless, whatever the differences of opinion, I welcome and enjoy threads such as this. Opinions count a lot towards relations with clients, even outside of the internet.

Windows Blue has nothing to do with the desktop. First and foremost, Windows Blue is all about Windows 8. Now, this is going to fail, because I said so, and I'm the smartest man on this planet. Do not let my cockiness detract you from the topic at hand. This will happen, because Microsoft is ignoring the human needs and focusing on technology, which is the expected kneejerk reaction from a company pressed into a corner by its own arrogant decisions.
Now, aside from the views about the desktop, which I agree, the bold is where he reverts back to an idiot.

That was the entire point of the article.
I guess you missed it.
And so, in line with their strategy, making the tiled interface work better is a smart thing to do, and has nothing to do with any death of any desktop.
...
As far as the desktop is concerned, whether we're talking a large computer in your living room or the rectangular interface where you click on things and whatnot, it might one day vanish in its current incarnation, but that will not happen until a technology that offers superior functionality comes and becomes dominant.

Now, aside from the views about the desktop, which I agree, the bold is where he is reverts back to an idiot.

The man get his point across with style. He makes a lot of sense too.
