Blue might not be as bad as we fear

Not that bothered about 8? You're not alone. To even the most disinterested observer, it's clear Microsoft has a lot work to do...

The change in tone.. was marked. Gone were the big messages about the Windows 8 Start screen and Windows 8-style apps... has the Start screen been over-emphasised?

I've changed my pitch...from starting with the Start screen to starting with the Windows desktop.

it's about doing their Windows 7 stuff and slowly get into 'OK I can do other things as well'. And suddenly it's 'well, I've got all these free apps I didn't know I had and I can play Angry Birds

I have been saying that since before it was released.

Moulster mused over whether there was a skew between early adopters and "people who are less techy". He also suggested that coming to Windows 8 without stigma does have positive results on touch-based devices.

Just when you think they are getting it ....oops, the use of the word stigma. That might explain why it took so long for the penny to drop. Or it might be they don't want to admit they were trying to force it. Either way - it is insulting - not a good idea to say it.

"I bought my mother, who's 76, a surface and - obviously while I helped her somewhat - she loves it and just gets on with it. She does her email, online banking, she does everything. What she doesn't use is the desktop. She doesn't really know it's there - she's got fairly simple needs.

Ian, she can do all that on cheap android thing, probably without any help. So what is your USP?

Microsoft: emphasis on Start Screen shackled Windows 8 | News | TechRadar

Hi there
Some people STILL want it to work as a desktop OS and don't give two monkeys about Mobile OS or Apps. This is where the Windows install process needs to work better -- most people even on these forums don't seem to get it that a bog standard user who say installs something like the full CS6 adobe suite is going to get confronted with zillions of tiles because each snivelling wretched .EXE file creates its own tile -- and to tell basic USERS things like "Just Unpin it" / Move the app to the desktop / taskbar etc. isn't going to cut it in any shape or form. Users are quite capable of running complex applications on their machines without being Windows Gurus in any shape or form either so knowing what to unpin or move is NOT A TRIVIAL TASK.

These tiles also aren't installed in any particular logical order unlike the traditional menu process but just slot in alphabetically anywhere on the screen - also not having recognizable icons etc makes the whole thing a real MESS.

People like me can sort out a bit of this stuff - I've created a couple of custom toolbars, pin one or two apps to the taskbar and created a few desktop short cuts too so I don't really miss the lack of a start bar / menu but I HATE the endless tile scrolling gig - fortunately I don't go to the start screen very often but that area would be my whole direction to remove a lot of bad vibes over Windows 8.

Why could we not have say a single tile for CS suite which when clicked could expand into the sub applications like Photoshop, Bridge etc etc.

As for touch -- even on a mobile phone scrolling loads of apps is not a very pleasant task either -- once you need to scroll more than about 5 times then IMO the whole usefulness of that type of interface has gone.

(5 Scrolls on a Samsung Galaxy S3 is around 100 applications - which is probably about typical for that type of phone - including those that come pre-installed on the phone if you get one tied to a contract. On a computer mouse scrolling tiles is JUST PLAIN ANNOYING).

The rest of W8 is like but that start screen --please sort it out Ms for DESKTOP users.

Cheers
jimbo

Hard to tell if those noises Ian is making will have much effect at HQ.

If they still want to force the start screen, maybe they should take a look at Ubuntu Unity again - they do it far better.

We will find out.

Been working with all the new versions of Win 8.1 (to date), and the only thing IMO that they need is the availability to change the background on the Start Screen. At present using Decor 8 (thirty day demo), and have to say the availability to be able to just change the screen to a picture makes a big difference.

MS comments above clearly admit it is causing a problem.

A lot of people can't stand it.

Perhaps making it look bit less like a mobile phone interface will be a small help, as you suggest. I think they would be better to do far more than that.

There is also that.

It is not what Ian is addressing. (link in first post ).

MS spends a couple of bn pushing out a new version of windows to be met with widespread indifference.

Apple or Samsung do a press release - queues form around the block. Even those not loopy enough to queue up are caught up in the buzz, or at the very least aware of it.

The commercials of those poor folks with stinging ants in their knickers didn't do the job for MS.

Not sure for your reasoning, albeit to each there own.

Now, I do not own a mobile phone nor have I, nor will I ever own one. The area that I live in is all mountains (in the range of 8,000 ft to 11,000 ft myself I am at 7600 ft and yes there is still over two-hundred inches of snow). The people (the little over three hundred in the whole county) voted five years ago to ban cell towers in this beautiful, and wild country. Thus, no reason to own the silly things. The land line works just fine.

As one who has it on his laptop, I can say I'm a bit indifferent toward the OS myself. I was planning on replacing it with Win 7, but after a while of messing with it... I'm in no hurry to do such a thing. I'm simply getting used to it; although I stay in desktop mode most of the time, I also find I use the metro interface more than I care to admit. And this is on a non-touch screen.

Hopefully Blue can make it better before I decide to replace my Win 7 OS on my desktop though.

Perhaps I missed that marketing campaign because Win 8 had to be the quietest release I'd ever seen or heard. Most people didn't even know it was released on "release day". Now, MS might be marketing it to high hell, but on release day - mouse quiet.

Wherein lies the Problems with Windows 8: It does not account for parts of the country where this is the case.

When I first saw Windows 8, in the stores, none of the machines had the desktop showing, and my first impression was, how the hell can I do anything with this? I am glad that first impressions, in my book, are always last. The desktop is there, and even if you DO install Adobe CS6 with all accouterments, you will still be able to use it, despite the thousands of new tiles it creates. I just noticed this, hahaha - I installed 3DSMax and it put about three rows of new tiles up there.

We both Love and Hate Windows 8, the Metro screen was shoved in our face. Microsoft should have shown that the beloved Desktop was in fact still there.

Now that I know - I CAN maintain my clients computers if and when they install Windows 8, I know they will lose no work ability, all of the programs I maintain run great. So now I have a model for how I will set up such systems, and the more I learn about the system, the more streamlined that process will become- SO that even people out in the boonies can play "Angry Birds" as well as keep using CS6 hahaha

I *was* responding to Lee, I was just saying, Microsoft is just assuming everyone in the world have broadband access or some kind of Mobile Service in the area - This is far from the case.

The Automotive Software I maintain - Now this is an example of what I'm saying - They would prefer to have it a subscription based cloud style service, but since there ARE those nooks and crannies that don't have Cable or DSL, they have to release versions of the software that can be activated and used without any internet connection at all. So the software has built in to it, two different ways of activating and using. One allows activation over the Net, the other by Phone - And it also has a way to pull it's data from a catalogue which they have online, or, you can use local data if there is no broadband.

(oh yah, here is all the tiles that Audodesk installed for me))

Yeah, I got that, but... does that mean cellphone companies should stop making phones because not every area can get service?

While it is unfortunate that everyone/area doesn't have access to internet/cell service, that doesn't mean technology stops for everyone else.

Microsoft has no more control over who gets internet access than say Version has over who gets cell service. In the case of both these companies, it would be beneficial if these services were available to all. That doesn't mean they stop producing new products though.

Anyway that's my logic, but...

Oh, and you mentioned Photoshop CS6 creating "thousands of new tiles", that's why I pointed that out.

We're cool though

That's basically my observations too. Some hate it, most like, most are indifferent. As they see it, if it's faster, it's better. A person I was speaking to recently who was telling me some issues about their desktop PC with 7 on it. I told them for what they do on their PC, 8 is MUCH better than 7. It's just easier I find. They researched Windows 8 the next day and said that they don't really care so much if they have to learn it because if they were to go out and buy a new PC, they're going to have to learn it either way.

That was rather poignant to me. People are going to end up learning it one way or another. It doesn't matter what a certain group of people that use Linux as much as if not more than Windows have to say about it.

I think it's annoying when third party software has SO many .exes and shortcuts. Some of those Autodesk tiles look like duplicates to me. It would be SO much better if they cut out the superfluous links and just simple incorporated those shortcuts into the main program. Put it under a drop down menu or a Settings or Options dialog box or something. It's the same issue that I had with the start menu except more tedious. There would be different folders that a program installed of shortcuts and .exes, and I'd had to go folder diving to move the relevant links to me to the All Programs list. One by freaking one. Then I could delete the folder, but in Windows 8 I would just open the file location and use File Explorer for all that goodness.

If that is aimed at me, it is wildly inaccurate.

Like a lot of your posts.

It doesn't matter what a certain group of people that use Linux as much as if not more than Windows have to say about it.

Where would you get that idea?

For those who may be thinking that we up here in the mountains have no internet available you are right, but only a little right. There is no cable, hence no internet from that source. Now some of the people do have DLS, but those are the ones who live down along the two main highways that pass through the Sawtooth Valley. Those of us that live several miles from the main roads (most of us live off the Forrest Service Roads (Dirt)) use Dirctv Satellite system along with their broadband system. The only problem is when we have white outs (at least two to three days a month during the winter, and sometime more), or in the summer when there are some really heavy rainy days we do lose service. Albeit do not feel bad for us because must of us have DVD/Blu-ray systems, and there is a great deal of disc swapping going on during the year.

We are happy people up here. . .no crime. . .
