Wherein lies the Problems with Windows 8: It does not account for parts of the country where this is the case.

When I first saw Windows 8, in the stores, none of the machines had the desktop showing, and my first impression was, how the hell can I do anything with this? I am glad that first impressions, in my book, are always last. The desktop is there, and even if you DO install Adobe CS6 with all accouterments, you will still be able to use it, despite the thousands of new tiles it creates. I just noticed this, hahaha - I installed 3DSMax and it put about three rows of new tiles up there.

We both Love and Hate Windows 8, the Metro screen was shoved in our face. Microsoft should have shown that the beloved Desktop was in fact still there.

Now that I know - I CAN maintain my clients computers if and when they install Windows 8, I know they will lose no work ability, all of the programs I maintain run great. So now I have a model for how I will set up such systems, and the more I learn about the system, the more streamlined that process will become- SO that even people out in the boonies can play "Angry Birds" as well as keep using CS6 hahaha

Perhaps I'm not getting what you're saying or mean, but isn't that like blaming Microsoft for parts of the world not having internet access

Well I have both Adobe CS6, and Adobe Lightroom 4 installed, and they didn't install any more links/shortcuts than they did under Windows 7...

I *was* responding to Lee, I was just saying, Microsoft is just assuming everyone in the world have broadband access or some kind of Mobile Service in the area - This is far from the case.

The Automotive Software I maintain - Now this is an example of what I'm saying - They would prefer to have it a subscription based cloud style service, but since there ARE those nooks and crannies that don't have Cable or DSL, they have to release versions of the software that can be activated and used without any internet connection at all. So the software has built in to it, two different ways of activating and using. One allows activation over the Net, the other by Phone - And it also has a way to pull it's data from a catalogue which they have online, or, you can use local data if there is no broadband.

(oh yah, here is all the tiles that Audodesk installed for me))

MS spends a couple of bn pushing out a new version of windows to be met with widespread indifference.

Apple or Samsung do a press release - queues form around the block. Even those not loopy enough to queue up are caught up in the buzz, or at the very least aware of it.

The commercials of those poor folks with stinging ants in their knickers didn't do the job for MS.
Because people dancing around like idiots doesn't relate to computer technology. How MS thought those TV spots were effective is just mind boggling.

Yeah, I got that, but... does that mean cellphone companies should stop making phones because not every area can get service?

While it is unfortunate that everyone/area doesn't have access to internet/cell service, that doesn't mean technology stops for everyone else.

Microsoft has no more control over who gets internet access than say Version has over who gets cell service. In the case of both these companies, it would be beneficial if these services were available to all. That doesn't mean they stop producing new products though.

    Anyway that's my logic, but...

Oh, and you mentioned Photoshop CS6 creating "thousands of new tiles", that's why I pointed that out.

    We're cool though

A lot of people can't stand it.

Perhaps making it look bit less like a mobile phone interface will be a small help, as you suggest. I think they would be better to do far more than that.
Based on my experience, most people are indifferent about windows 8. A few like myself love it and a few hate it. But again, most people just don't care.
That's basically my observations too. Some hate it, most like, most are indifferent. As they see it, if it's faster, it's better. A person I was speaking to recently who was telling me some issues about their desktop PC with 7 on it. I told them for what they do on their PC, 8 is MUCH better than 7. It's just easier I find. They researched Windows 8 the next day and said that they don't really care so much if they have to learn it because if they were to go out and buy a new PC, they're going to have to learn it either way.

That was rather poignant to me. People are going to end up learning it one way or another. It doesn't matter what a certain group of people that use Linux as much as if not more than Windows have to say about it.

I think it's annoying when third party software has SO many .exes and shortcuts. Some of those Autodesk tiles look like duplicates to me. It would be SO much better if they cut out the superfluous links and just simple incorporated those shortcuts into the main program. Put it under a drop down menu or a Settings or Options dialog box or something. It's the same issue that I had with the start menu except more tedious. There would be different folders that a program installed of shortcuts and .exes, and I'd had to go folder diving to move the relevant links to me to the All Programs list. One by freaking one. Then I could delete the folder, but in Windows 8 I would just open the file location and use File Explorer for all that goodness.

If that is aimed at me, it is wildly inaccurate.

For those who may be thinking that we up here in the mountains have no internet available you are right, but only a little right. There is no cable, hence no internet from that source. Now some of the people do have DLS, but those are the ones who live down along the two main highways that pass through the Sawtooth Valley. Those of us that live several miles from the main roads (most of us live off the Forrest Service Roads (Dirt)) use Dirctv Satellite system along with their broadband system. The only problem is when we have white outs (at least two to three days a month during the winter, and sometime more), or in the summer when there are some really heavy rainy days we do lose service. Albeit do not feel bad for us because must of us have DVD/Blu-ray systems, and there is a great deal of disc swapping going on during the year.

We are happy people up here. . .no crime. . .
