Retailers didn't do Windows 8 any favors

Microsoft must assume some of the blame for the poor retailing, Baker implied. But rather than directly criticize Microsoft, he simply noted, "They did not do anything different" at Windows 8's launch to prepare retailers or assist them. "But hindsight is really easy six months later."
The bold direction of Windows 8, with its emphasis on touch as a selling point, presented retailers with problems they'd never encountered -- detachable displays for example -- a core feature of the so-called "convertible" devices that morph from a notebook into a tablet by swiveling the screen to a new position or removing it entirely. "That isn't the norm of what we've had in the market before," Baker said, referring to retailers' confusion over how to secure those detachable screens or show the mutating nature of the device in the absence of a salesperson.

Moorhead cited Apple's retail stores as the right way to promote and sell today's computers -- and other computing devices, like tablets. "Interestingly, I never see the [retail problems with Windows 8 notebooks] at an Apple store. Never, ever," Moorhead said. "I can sit at the Apple store there for hours and literally do a test drive like I would a car."

This reminded me of something. The other day I was in the not so best buy looking for a cheap wireless adapter (long story short, Newegg is the one and only way to go for good quality, VERY cheap hardware as I bought a PCI E wifi card for 9 dollars new whereas the cheapest USB wifi adapter was 30) and I wanted to play with the Surface tablets again. When I got there, a Verizon rep was showing how the Surface Pro was a really nice laptop to a guy that was real interested in it. I started to go Newegg.com to buy the actual wifi card, and she approached me and asked if I knew things about the Surface tablets. Of course I do. She did not as she said I blew her away with how much I know about them. She didn't know the differences between the Pro and RT, even though the best buy staff basically just told her the Pro is the best computer. That was it, not that the RT has the same processor type as the ipad, or that the Pro can be used over a phablet and laptop.

Sales people are idiots when it comes to Windows 8. I mean, wow.

A friend of mine that was working at Costco's electronics sales department was telling me that they had a booklet about Windows 8 and one of the sales people said that Windows 8 was tricky to learn. This is the same friend who I've had running Windows 8 as long as I have, since around September 2011 so I could gauge how Windows 8 would be received by "normal" people.

I've seen this sort of thing too. But its not windows. They don't have a very good working knowledge of Android usually too. In my experience all they know is IOS. My 5yo son has totally mastered IOS.

Don't be too hard on them. Think about it this way. Why are they there in the first place? Most of these people have nothing higher than a high school degree. They probably know more than the average customer, but if you are here on this forum then my money is on you knowing more than they do.

Regarding the difference between RT and pro, I don't blame them for not knowing the difference.

Read my post in that thread to see why. Basically speaking, I encountered 2 Samsung and 1 MS tech support dudes that thought windows 8 and windows RT were the same thing and will run the same applications.

If anything, blame MS for not educating people enough about this.

I think the problem Windows 8 has isn't what it is, but what it is perceived to be.

Microsoft made a very good, but complicated OS. They marketed it poorly in my opinion.

The media has not covered it well, either through incompetence or (more likely) a strong Apple bias.

Retailers have also marketed Windows 8 and RT poorly. Either through indifference, bias or incompetence. Their staff don't understand it well, and often give confusing and incorrect information to customers. I've witnessed and experienced this.

Lastly, users are lazy and ignorant. We have been bottle-fed on a decade of Apple stuff. People want easy and simple, whereas Microsoft has made something complicated and powerful.

Everybody else is to blame, are they - media retailers and users ?

The main culprit being Apple, apparently.

The first blame was assigned to Microsoft.

It is always Microsoft's RESPONSIBILITY to train retailers properly or to make sure they understand the product completely. They failed in this respect, but it is also on the Retailers, who could look into it better, and on the consumers who apparently do not know These Windows Vista/Seven/Eight forums exist - They can FIND it, like we all did - They simply do not look, the come across a roadblock, they just give up and go play with an xBox. and of course it is Apples fault for developing good OSs that are friendly to all levels of users.

With that last statement, I think I should make myself clear - I'm an Apple guy, who can't afford to buy the Apple products he wants. But my Job is to maintain computers, of all types - This is why I need to KNOW how they all work. Windows 8 is new, so I need to spend the time in here to see all of the things that a user may come across- I have found some good solutions in here, soon, I will be implementing them as more of my customers buy Windows 8 machines.

I don't find Apple's OSs to be friendly at all. I think they are limiting, suffocating, simplistic and dumbed down. The IPad for example is a great device for children, or people who are computer illiterate, but I don't know what on earth I'd do with one, it cant do anything. The computer/tech culture has been dumbed down a lot. I think that's sad. I like stuff that's complicated and different. I like my Surface, because its different. I like that I'm still discovering new things about the OS months in. I think Microsoft built an OS for smart people. I guess that probably WAS an error in our current environment.

And no, I'm not saying you're stupid if you don't like 8, so please don't infer that.

I don't agree, I think it's as simple or as complex as you want it to be, just like Windows. I can dumb down my Desktop AND Metro to the same point you are saying as well as I can complicate my MACOS Dock and Desktop. Plus I use four different desktops in MACOS, each with the aliases I want. But I can always take a screenshot of my brother's i7 Mountain Lion Titanium Tower, which looks like those busy desktop's MDMD was posting images of. And he does a LOT of complex Musical recording, mixing, mastering and even his artwork on it. The same programs that I use for Music, he has on his machine, plus access to plugins that are not even made for Windows.

I'll say this - Apple's move to Intel processors was the biggest mistake they ever made, and the only mistake they ever made. I've never seen a G4 or G5 whole screen White Out like it does with Intel Macs, or Windows Vista through 8. White Out, happens to me all the time, happens on Macs with Mountain Lion, happens only on Intel Processors.

As far as Windows 8, I like the Desktop and I like the Speed. I don't like a bunch of other stuff. I'm only learning now what I can disable and what I can't, cos they installed this automatic repair system that cannot be interrupted once begun lest you want to damage your drive. I don't like that it takes that repair system an inordinately long amount of time to run with little or no progress report.

I don't like the lack of good Apps in the Metro store. Other than that, I like it, I'm USING it, ain't I? :p :)

No, it's different factors. Retailers were part of it as it seems they aren't training their staff properly about Windows 8.

Microsoft didn't have a navigation tutorial after the OOBE screen to show how to ACTUALLY use the new Windows.

Some people still have a rigid notion about what a PC is and how to interact with it.

OEMs continued to release Windows 7 PCs with Windows 8 and MANY still lack touch screens to ACTUALLY use the new Windows nicely. That, as well as tablets that are ipad designed devices, not Surface Pro like tablet PCs that are SO much more useful than a simple tablet design such as the ipad.

Speaking of apps, this youtube client app from Windows Phone 8 was just recently released on Windows 8, VERY nice! Although I would rather see them use screen estate better. It's called MetroTube. THE BEST youtube client app I've ever used on ANY platform, and that is an understatement, at least on Windows Phone.

That's a good YooToob app - But one thing I worry about, are these 3rd Party apps that connect to my Facebook etc accounts - I basically don't trust em. My icloud/me.com email address is being inundated with unmitigated SPAM. The only thing I have done recently is install several of these questionable apps, I think the spam originates from one of these. It's hard to tell which one, cos I really don't know yet which apps are truly legit.

Don't those apps ask you for that information? Usually, the more "legit" apps will ask for your location if you allow, your music library, or your network. Unless if you voluntarily sign into a facebook account, that shouldn't be happening. I would imagine...

How about the fact that ms made an os that most people don't want, don't like and/or don't need.. Exactly where does that figure into the equation...

Now, explain to me exactly how they have learned so little, and seem poised to repeat/compound the error with blue....

So, it's the retailers fault win8 is what it is, not ms's.....???

No, it's different factors. Retailers were part of it as it seems they aren't training their staff properly about Windows 8.

How about the fact that ms made an os that most people don't want, don't like and/or don't need.. Exactly where does that figure into the equation...

Now, explain to me exactly how they have learned so little, and seem poised to repeat/compound the error with blue....

I don't think you're being melodramatic enough.

Most people are sheeps. They will use whatever OS that is preloaded on their system when they bought it. Only a hand full will either love it or hate it.

Unless if you voluntarily sign into a facebook account, that shouldn't be happening. I would imagine...

Facebook Pro and several other not-made-by-facebook Tiles do this very thing. I made the error of signing in once, I logged out as quick as I could. Once I find out they are safe, I'll use them again. I need to know more. A Truly Legit app would use my Skydrive account, which is connected to a lot of the services I use. One "Word Doc Reader" actually was UPLOADING my private Word Docs up to some unnamed website! Why would a Word READER need to upload my files somewhere?

I am positive that at least one of my Windows 8 Metro apps is an unmitigated Virus

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Retailers didn't do Windows 8 any favors
?? No, it's not the retailers (nor the users or pc manufacturers), it's Windows 8 that didn't do Windows 8 any favors!

Or put another way, Microsoft didn't do Windows 8 any favors.
