Inside Microsoft’s earnings: Windows 8, Xbox money machine

MSFT reported pretty good earning this quarter. Wish they would report unit sales on Windows 8.

Frankly, I’d say that it’s a rather decent performance. The current narrative surrounding Windows 8 and the larger PC market is that they are in painful decline, with unit volume shrinking and consumer reaction negative to the latest Microsoft operating system. To have revenue be flat – on a non-GAAP basis – is therefore in contradiction to that perspective. What’s going on?

Not sure that tells us much.

Except perhaps the idea of monetising the xbox users is bringing in the cash. OS users are next .

I'm guessing that Windows 8 isn't selling as well as Microsoft thought it would. Personally, I even thought WELL before this time Windows 8 wouldn't take good ground for a year or so. A risky bet they took with Windows 8, it will take time before it can be found that is was worth it.

Very good that they have positive growth in all divisions though!

Just think what'll happen if they ever get around to fixing Windows 8. Still have yet to migrate off 7 on the Workstation, even though I have the disk ready for it. But I do use the Surface Pro, so I can see if they get it how I would like it for the workstation. I don't tend to go for third-party apps as it usually becomes a whack-a-mole to ensure they work every patch, but their functionality is something Microsoft should definitely integrate.

My big thing is I had a really terrible time during the Vista era, so i'm not going to give up 7 on the workstation, until 8 gets to how I want it. Even if it means I wait for them to fix it in 8.1, 9, 10, or 11 /shrug. I have like 6 years and Windows 7 does what I need desktop-wise.

Don't be fooled by Microsoft's earning report about Windows growth

But it's not necessarily so. That revenue includes $1.1 billion of revenue that was really gained in previous quarters, from Windows 7 sales under a program to offer free Windows 8 upgrades. So in truth, Windows sales were flat from the year previous.

Nothing new here. That is the point of the original article, i.e., Windows revenue was flat on a non-GAAP basis. But with non-tablet PC sales down so much, everyone was expecting to see a decline in Windows revenue, not flat. Flat is good.

Agreed. And with such good earnings and plenty of cash in the bank, the real story of MSFTs staying power. That staying power means they have time to correct the WIN8 issues and respond to market forces.
