Don't blame Windows 8 for slumping PC sales

PC sales are slumping and the technological prophets of doom are quick to point the finger at Microsoft and its Windows 8 operating system.

I remember laptops back in the early 2000s....

They could not replace desktops. But nowadays the laptop has replaced the desktop in the consumer space pretty decently.

Tablets and phablets can't really replace desktops. But tablet PCs with Core i3/i5/i7 processors can or ones with AMD APUs.

    All about adapting.

Win 8 is not the main reason. It's the technologically challenged people who expressed all the negativities about Win 8 who are to blame.

But then again, Bill Gates once said: "Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning."

Microsoft learns their lesson the hard way.

    Hi there

Once I see the word GARTNER in the article then I KNOW that the PC's decline will now be slowing -- Gartner is the most USELESS source of information EVER -- I'd trust my Late Grandma's Cat more than mouthings from Gartner.

Actually It's like all things in Markets -- a HUGE surge is followed by a Huge fall as people try and correct and over compensate.

Then the wild swings get less as people adjust to the new reality and things stabilize out.

I think even with tablets eventually the PC market will recover slightly -- people can do all sorts of things at home on a computer that are just plain IMPOSSIBLE with a tablet. (The fact that GARTNER says the PC market is dead just confirms my belief in the PC market making a SMALL recovery).

My MUM in her 90th year is just starting to learn PHOTOSHOP -- she's just bought her FIRST digital camera at age 90 (a Canon DSLR) and loves it -- she really HATES the horrible always "in Focus" type of "Tourist" Snaps mobile phone cameras yield - even if they do have 14 mp's etc .

There's no nice "Bokeh" or even shallow depth of field you can get with these types of mobile phone cameras. So people like her with a lot of leisure time will probably opt for REAL computers -- at her age portability isn't an issue.

The PC market is essentially mature -- this means far less sales than formerly -- but if My old mum is anything to go by it is NOT DEAD (and she really couldn't give two hoots over WHAT OS is on it ) -- all she wants to do is to be able to load the pictures from the camera into the computer, process them with photoshop and then print them (in A3+ size) on a nice quality printer.

    Cheers

Hi there I don't know if this is normal practice in the UK but I was helping a friend to buy a laptop and went into a large PC World store. Well apart from the fact that 90% of the laptops on display were largish 15.6 inch screen ones everything was bolted down tight to the display so it was...
BSOD - ntkrnlmp.exe to blame? in BSOD Crashes and Debugging
Hi, my PC has developed a severe case of BSOD over the last couple of days - hopefully someone can help! The last change I remember making before this started to happen was auto-updating a driver for my xbox 360 controller. I've tried antivirus and antimalware programs but from research this...
Dell replays Windows 8 blame card as PC sales slide - Computerworld
I saw this article over at Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows. I've been following Paul for several months now on the Windows Weekly podcast on Twit. He has been cautiously optimistic about Windows 8, but recently has taken a gloomier stance. He made no secret of his disdain for Steve Sinofsky...
