Intel could give Windows 8 break it has been waiting for

What will it take to help give stagnating PC sales a bit of a boost? Intel hopes that Windows 8-powered notebooks with a $200 to $300 price tag might do the trick.

I think that it's fair to say that Windows 8 hasn't been the rip-roaring success that Microsoft hoped it would be. All data seems to suggest that it hasn't jump-started the stalling PC industry. But that could all change thanks to Intel.

The chip giant is planning to work with hardware makers and Microsoft to bring to market cheap, touch-enabled Windows 8 notebooks powered by the companies upcoming Bay Trail Atom silicon.

CEO Paul Otellini hopes that "touch-enabled Intel based notebooks that are ultrathin and light using non-core processors" could come to market "as low as $200 probably."

And it's not just the cheap end of the market that Intel is interested in. Otellini also sees devices that offer "really good performance" that are going to be "hitting kind of $300 price points."

    Hi there
I seem to be the doom sayer in a load of these new posts - but really THESE days if I need a TOUCH device I'd use a tablet / smart phone.

If I need a Laptop (however cheap it is) it's because I NEED a computer with a Mouse / Keyboard. For a lot of "Office" type apps or "Photoshop" type stuff a Touch screen is largely a total irrelevance.

Sorry to be a bit negative - but that's my take on a lot of this stuff. Flagging PC sales aren't (as other have posted frequently) due to the popularity (or otherwise) of Windows 8 or any other OS.

    Cheers

I'll believe this when I see it, a $200 laptop? Seems they'd be made too poorly with very cheap components. Still would rather spend the extra $ and buy an iPad at least. Seems they're grasping at straws a bit.

See, my question has been that why are prices so bloody high to begin with? Windows RT tablets started at 500 dollars. FIVE HUNDRED! That is a laptop PC with some decent specs right there without touch. They should had started at 2-300 hundred at the least. Then there are the touch laptops and tablet PCs, good grief, 700 dollars for a tablet PC with an Atom processor? Prices aren't that attractive to say the least. If one wants to point blame at Windows 8 PC shipments, I'd also suggest the prices. By far too high.

ARM tablets be at 2-300 dollars.

    Atom PCs at 3-400 dollars.

i-series based laptop PCs at 4-500 dollars.

Add touch for about 100-150 more on the laptops and ultrabooks.

Make touchscreens less bloody expensive as well, 600+ for a 27 inch touchscreen is murderous.

Why would you buy an ipad when you could buy a far superior Windows 8 or RT tablet at that cost?

Far superior? Matter of opinion. At this point in time with both the devices in their current states - the choice for me is clear, I wouldn't even think twice.

The choice is clear to me as well, I wouldn't pay up 500 dollars for basically a toy device that has the same feature set as an ipod touch. It's all play and no ability otherwise.

Well, I guess that's where we differ. Notice I didn't belittle the MS tablet, but if you think calling it an overpriced "toy" is supposed to somehow insult my personal preference - then whatever makes you feel better, go with it.

$500 is nothing to me really, I've spent more than that on worse. And it's a tablet, to me that means "play". If I want to work I have desktops and ultrabooks that are much more comfortable and pleasurable to use.

    Hi there
    That's fine for you.

I don't starve but I would certainly think twice (or even seven times) before spending 500 USD on something I didn't really want.

We come from a reasonably wealthy part of the world too -- but in loads of places 500 USD would be regarded as a small fortune - and it really doesn't matter how much (or little) money you have -- it should be treated like any other valuable resource -- not to be wasted and to be used sensibly.

I've also bought stuff I've regretted too -- I'm sure we all have but that doesn't mean we all go out and buy stuff willy nilly without at least researching a bit as to whether we really WANT the device.

    Cheers

Cokie is not consistent. You will get used to him.

He was convinced everyone would be gagging to go 500 bucks for RT tablet.

Now he is saying something else.

To me the whole thing revolves around the apps, if there are 1,000's of great ones then I can see Metro catching on, if there are only going to be 300 or so average apps then I don't see are really good future for Windows 8. Also hopefully there will be a better way to manipulate the apps then...
