Start button to re-appear in Windows Blue (From W7 Forum)

Microsoft may be moving toward bringing back the Start Button and allowing users to boot straight to the desktop with its coming Windows 8.1 release later this year.

Interesting. Though it matters little to me, there are those that would jump on the chance to see the Start Bottom back. The only thing I would be interested in is the return of Aero (sorry just like the looks of Aero).

Though if Microsoft does bring it back won't that upset developers who have made a good deal of money from the sales of third party Start Bottoms. . .

If they want it to sell better.

Quite bizarre they didn't do that in the first place.

Interesting question: Which one will be default.. I guess this is an easy one.

Although I'm with Lee: it matters little to me.
To me, the menu worked fine when I used it, the screen works fine now.

Yep....me being one of those users....but mine was gifted to me...using start8 and modernmix....in conjunction with the start menu...so I've got the best of both worlds...

I'm no fan of the Modern UI as it stands. But even I think bringing back the Start button might be a mistake.

What I think MS should do is work out why people dislike the removal of Start button (apart from "it's different"), work out what's good about it, and attempt to bring those features into the Modern UI.

For instance one thing which I see is good about the Start button is that in Windows 7 and earlier, it's a point of reference which is (with few exceptions) always there and you can always see it. So for people who don't use computers that often, it makes it easier to navigate because you can always go back to it, and the taskbar.

(Interestingly my Windows Phone, and I'm guess perhaps also the Surfaces(?) have a hardware button with the Windows Flag symbol outside the screen, which of course is always visible to the user. I think this is along the lines of how I'm thinking, but obviously you lose that on a conventional desktop or laptop).

I know people like the look and style of Modern UI, but it shouldn't be beyond the resources of Microsoft to devise a way to keep most of that look and style but still improve it (and of course to allow multiple windows!).

There is no doubt having boot to desktop AND a start menu will help sales.

The point is to drive the os from the desktop when appropriate, or from mobile phone interface UI . Whichever is right for the device one is using.

They could do well with that.

As it is now - they are repelling potential buyers.

For those who don't know, the golden rule in a nutshell:

    1) Don't worry about those who like the product

    2) Pay a lot of attention to those who don't like it - and fix the dealbreakers.

    There you go.

MS should provide both worlds to start with.

I expect there will be the loopy few posting up they already do and other self delusions.

Matters very little to me. I've been off the start menu since September 2011 and have little need to go back to it.

Yes, maybe Microsoft has finally realised that it's far more important to listen to your critics than your fans. Maybe there really are more critics than fans. Maybe they realised that their customer experience program isn't a reliable source of information for design planning. Maybe their bottom line is really hurting and someone has suggested, 'what if..?'.
