Microsoft integrating Windows Phone and Windows?

A well-connected but regularly erroneous publication is reporting that Microsoft is developing Windows Blue as a project that will merge desktop Windows with Windows Phone.

So far so good. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 already share lots of bits and pieces. The kernel is the same across both platforms, big chunks of code like Direct3D and .NET are identical, and there are some pieces of the new WinRT API also common to both.

There's also been a leaked, new Windows build that adds onto Windows 8 but makes multitasking more versatile, and makes the touch-first, Metro environment more expansive. Later builds contain "Windows 8.1" branding, which would make sense for a minor release that's generally expected to ship late this year.

Windows phone has a lot of growing to do. I do like my Nokia quite a bit ( I would trade it for an Android in a heart beat though), but it has quite a few short comings that I have found over the past couple months to get over before even I can take it as a serious platform. You can't attach anything but pictures to email, no team veiwer or real RDC to speak of, no Hulu+, most of the apps are crap and cost, can't download a file that the phone itself doesn't understand (zip is a big one) I used this alot on Android, it made it more of a portable HD. Right now it is IMO a consumption device, not a device to do any real work on. I just hope they fix this stuff with the blue update!

I don't agree there with you geeve420. I've had a Android Phone until it broke down due to an error in an update provided by Google/Samsung. They underscribe the fact that their update is the problem generator, but they wouldn't fix the issue, leaving me and a lot of customers with a worthless Phone. Their argument..... "the model is older than 6 months, so go and buy a new one!".
I also had to reboot the Phone every day due to memory leaks!

I threw my old Android away and bought myself a Windows Phone. Since the first moment I've loved it!!! I can do everything I want with it and more. No more rebooting, updates two times a day etc.
==> It just works and I'm loving it

That's great Der Snoober, I am glad it does what you need it to! The Nokia I have is a solid phone, but IMO is not ready for a work environment, To each there own I never had any trouble with Android, I would change ROMS all the time and never relied on AT&T or Samsung for updates.

I will correct my statement above though, you can attach other files to email but you have to have it open. It can't be done from with in the email app itself unless it's a picture.

Just my personal observations on the platform. I really want it to succeed, but there is to much lacking. That is why I said I hope they fix this stuff in the Blue update, or at least get some of it worked out. No RDC is a big one for me, as well as not being able to download files to the phone that I can attach to email or pull off when I get to a PC is also basic and another big draw back for me. How hard would it have been to add a download folder that it downloads files to. I don't need my phone telling me I can't download a file because it doesn't understand what it is or what to do with it. How about it downloads the file then lets me decide what to do with it. Even if they made the Downloads folder only available when plugged into a computer. Just my opinion of course....

I see what you mean there Geeve. There is indeed no filemanager on the Windows Phone. And a function like you've described could upgrade the user experience for some people.

The reason I'm not an Android fan perse is exactly why it seems to me that you like it. For me a product must work out of the box. The fact that you can customize and tweak it into the extreme with custom ROMs etc. might be great for a lot of people. For me that is over the top. I don't want to spend time reading about custom ROMs and trying different versions etc. I might have liked that back when I was a student. But now a Phone must just work out of the box, not after hours of extra work from me.

Perhaps that's the main reason why I'm not a Linux user on my desktop either .

That's why we have choices the world would be boring and quite frankly suck if we all had only one choice.

I just recently went to Linux full time, but I would never talk down to anyone who liked/loved Windows. I think it is non productive and helps no one. If folks would realize it's all opinion and what works for you, things would be much nicer. Opinions are like @%^holes....everyone has one and they all stink. Including mine LOL.

It was nice talking with you, first time in a while on here that two folks with way different ideas and passions just had a nice conversation

Just realized there is no VPN support either for WP8, as I was trying to connect. I mean not even an option. You have got to be kidding me!!! Unless this update brings alot of functionality, Android and iOS will continue to dominate the corporate market. I still and everyday I use it, feel this is a consumption device and not an actual work device. Kind of a joke really. The longer I use it, the more I hate it. the apps and phone may "just work", but you certainly aren't going to do any.....
