Microsoft wins, even if the PC loses

I am simply stunned by the ridiculous number of "Microsoft will be dead in four years" stories, following Gartner's grim PC forecast three days ago. I offered brief analysis then and promised something later, and this is it. Yesterday, colleague Alan Buckingham posted first: "Microsoft is nowhere near death's door" -- and he absolutely is right.

Throw a rock, and you can't miss a doom-and-gloom armchair analysis. Among the many are "Gartner: Microsoft is dead, Windows has expired, Office has ceased to be" (Computerworld); "How long can Microsoft go on like this?" (InfoWorld); "Apple's ultimate victory over Microsoft" (Motley Fool); and "Gartner may be too scared to say it, but the PC is dead" (ReadWrite). For the most part, all these armchair pundits are mistaken. Hugely.

Some of us remember the days when Microsoft primarily made products for platforms other than the PC. The first program of theirs I ever remember using was Microsoft Multiplan on the TI-99/4A.

And the writer there does make good points. With the 'next generation' being when they attempt to bring 4K visuals into the computing arena... the generation of, the editing of, and the consumption of. The technology will start with PC's and work its way down, not the other way around... as PC's are the only thing that can contain the space for both the processors and storage needed to drive the technology.

They'll simply wreck anything smaller until a couple generations of Moore's Law later.

Microsoft is hardly going to be dead anytime soon, it's simply far too massive and pervasive for that to happen. Nor is the PC anywhere near dead, though even some here seem to think that's the case and a tablet can do everything. PC sales may have effectively plateaued, but it's still a very big industry and that plateau indicates that that the PC has effectively established, or entrenched, itself to such a degree that it has no where else to expand.

However, the writer didn't really analyse very well the effects of Windows 8, making a pretty big assumption that it will become all encompassing and reign like XP and 7 do at the moment. That remains to be seen. And his parting statement doesn't provide a complete ring of confidence:

Unquestionably, the company's position would be stronger if more smartphones or tables shipped with some Windows version. That said, Microsoft can win, even if the PC market loses to other devices.

The thing about Microsoft's business model is that it's forked, meaning there are different paths it has for revenues. There is the Xbox and its derivatives (Xbox Live, Xbox Music+Video Store, Xbox game points, Xbox TV which may or may not become an actual device, possibly an Xbox Surface), there is Office (2013 suite on Windows, 365, Office Web Apps, Office Mobile on Windows Phone, possibly on ios as they've bypassed the SkyDrive app issue with apple, Office I think on Linux), there is Bing (Outlook.com, SkyDrive, Bing Search on Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox), Skype (ios, android, Windows, Windows Phone, mac) and then there's Surface (RT, Pro and later a Pro 2 and possibly a Surface laptop and/or Xbox Surface). That along with Windows (7, 8 being currently sold and supported) and Windows Phone (7.8 being sold and supported as well as 8). If one branch fails, there is another that can grow. That's why Microsoft has lasted pretty long, even though its stock price hasn't been very high, it's been able to keep profit stream steady.

There are a total of 8(eight) divisions within MS, I'm still trying to understand their intent with 8  ...
Not that it matters to MS, of course....and some others....

Online Services Division: Microsoft’s search, portal, advertising and personal communications services, including online information offerings such as Bing and the MSN portals and channels.

Server and Tools Business: Microsoft infrastructure software, developer tools and cloud platform, including products such as Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, System Center and the Windows Azure Platform.

Microsoft Business Solutions: A portfolio of Microsoft Dynamics products and services, as well as Microsoft Health Solutions.

Microsoft Office Division: Productivity products and services, including Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, Visio, and Microsoft’s speech technology investments.

Interactive Entertainment Business: Key entertainment experiences that span gaming, music and video across multiple screens, including Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, the controller-free Kinect for Xbox 360, Xbox Music and Video, and Mediaroom, as well as PC and mobile interactive entertainment.

Windows Phone Division: Microsoft software and services for Windows Phones worldwide.

Windows Division: All Windows businesses, including Windows, Windows Live and Internet Explorer.

Skype: A division of Microsoft, transforming communications for computers, mobile devices and the connected living room.

Hi there
I've posted on the site enough times about the current direction of the Market sentiments over AAPL (our famous "Fruit company") and MSFT -- You can check the current market positions very easily on places like Yahoo finance -- and you'll see that AAPL has dropped from over 700 USD to around 440 USD --hardly a good investment whilst MSFT has climbed back to nearly 28.5 USD which is only 4 USD off a 52 week high.

In fact some of last Sundays press in the UK (the Glossy colour supplements which have all the expensive gizmos the "celebs" are in to) not a SINGLE Apple device appeared in the top 10 wish list for the first time in a decade --even an Iphone wasn't in the top ten and the Ipad mini was hideously low on the scale.

Now of course stats are very volatile and have to be used with care -- but even assuming most of these "Celebs" already own apple products it certainly doesn't look encouraging if they aren't looking in wanting to buy new ones.

I'd sleep much better in my bed as CEO of MSFT than of AAPL currently. Even iTunes is beginning to feel the pinch of competition such as Spotify etc as new cheap music subscription services get more popular and the laughable attempts by some jurisdictions to ban access to sites such as Kat and the Pirate Bay prove totally ineffective --Even on the Virgin website itself (Virgin - one of the ISP's that the UK recently told to ban access to some of these sites) people were posting on the forums how to bypass the block.
(UK readers - it's only VIRGIN, BT, and SKY that have the "Ban" -- others still have free access).

Now whatever one thinks of illegal music downloads it happens and there's not much anybody can do about it - so if you are primarily promoting a business model where your main content is highly "piratable" the market isn't going to have much confidence in your possibilities of making future profits and maintaining the stockholders dividends.

Finally IGNORE EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING SPEWED OUT BY GARTNER (Caps intended) --the most useless "information source" in the entire universe --their predictions come out exactly what you'd come up with by RANDOM GUESSING. Perhaps Gartners should take "The Gorilla and Typewriter" test.

Cheers
jimbo

I've been reading pundits predicting the end of M$ and PC's since about 1987 and it hasn't happened yet. Tablets, the Palm (remember those?) and all kinds of now-dead technology were supposed to replace the PC over the years. Some will be well served with smartphones and tablets but some of us will always need a PC and it will probably run an OS by M$...

I also think it's ridiculous to predict M$'death on a short term basis. Thought every version of Windows™ has disapointed users one way or another, they still do terrific business because poeple and companies need them. Too many poeple need their products and services to go under
They are losing millions, maybe hundreds of million on the W8/Metro adventure, yes, but for them one hundrerd million is not even money.

Smart! Unfortunately it's not the case. PC versions of Windows™ cannot run tablets and Metro/ModernUI/RT cannot run PCs. It happens that W8 contains both Windows™ and Metro but they are still very far from developing a one fit all OS.
The problem with M$ softwares is bloat: Had they kept Windows™ small, simple and coded efficiently, they would have probably succeeded in the tablet area.

Regardless of what the critics say Microsoft will be around for at least a couple more days. . . If you really want to see the power of Microsoft walk into just about any hospital in the world, go into just about any government office, and you will see the power of Microsoft. Even those who find Windows 8 to their dislike will still remain with some form of Microsoft Windows. Microsoft is embedded/entrenche way to deep in all of sociatial needs to come crashing down over night as it would appear some of it critics would believe or want.

If they don't like win 8 most go back to win 7, and yes a few have jumped the Microsoft ship other the years, albeit they come swimming back.

Well stated and needed, Lee.

It does seem that we have those on here that think Microsoft is some small slouch corporation that'll fold overnight. On the other hand we have some that seem to think it's a monopoly.

Microsoft is a huge corporation with 8 divisions:

http://www.microsoft.com/about/companyinformation/ourbusinesses/en/us/business.aspx

Will MS crumble? Anything is possible, but I very highly doubt it.

Monopoly? The U.S. Federal court filed suite. MS satisfied everything them turkeys wanted. I never agreed with the accusations. I think that Gates and company never thought they'd be such a success. I always thought they were fair on pricing even though they were the biggest.

Reading the original article by A Guy to me back to 1983 when I started reading about the televisions. We were still watching a 19 inch television.
My wife won $1000 playing Kroger bingo. It took them forever to verify it and send us her winnings. When they did, we were off for a new TV set.
Only three requirements. 1.— Floor model 2.— Remote control 3.— Cable ready (no more adapter)

The salesman showed us where not only is that Zenith 27 inch TV cable ready; it has a knockout plate for the future when people start connecting computers and other things to their TV.

From that experience I agree with all those who say MS has sealed their fate. Not in a negative way though.
Making everybody taste Windows 8 will remain with them when they go to buy phones and tablets. It has to be better when your portable plays well with your desktop.
I've found Windows 8 to be much more fulfilling by reading and adapting what other people have experienced and shared. Many of them lead to the tutorial section and many of the tutorials by Brink.
Maybe a tab 'Tips & Tricks' would encourage some positive interaction and understanding of 8.

Not really....

And no, Windows 8 is already a one size fits all OS to an extent, it takes user input to do that to fine tune it. Then again.....

Win 7 will be with us probably for the next 10 years just like XP. Win 8 would only be for home use with all it's fun and not so fun factors. Big corporations will not adapt win 8 to run their businesses just like what happened to Vista. It is not a very good tool for productivity.

False.

Maybe a tab 'Tips & Tricks' would encourage some positive interaction and understanding of 8.

This right here sounds GR8 in theory, but in practice completely falls through the toilet. It's surprising how in this day and age where there is a digital oracle of information literally at millions of people's finger tips, no one uses it for actual learning and information it seems.

"I had to google how to shutdown Windows 8, Windows 8 sucks!" Wow, you learned how to do something new in 8 that you didn't know before that helped you use the OS, and it sucks because it doesn't work like 7? OK.

False.

Officially stated Windows 7 support ends 2020, XP support ends this year (after a significant extension). Apparently, when support ends, XP will keep working on users PCs etc. Do you know something the rest of us don't about Windows 7? Most people are assuming that it will be still functioning in 2023, at the very least.
