Intel confirms USB bug in 'Haswell' chipset

The chipmaker says a USB bug in the chipset that accompanies the "Haswell" processor exists and will be fixed.

Intel confirmed a USB bug in its next-generation "Haswell" chipset.

The bug can cause USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0 devices, like thumb drives, to disappear after entering standby. In some cases, removable devices have to be reconnected again, according to a report at BSN.

The company issued the following statement this afternoon. The bug, in Intel parlance, is referred to as an "errata." The chipset is silicon that accompanies the main Haswell processor:

That probably should be fixed before release, no?

If I was the engineer in charge of Haswell and saw that bug, I wouldn't release it. Yes, it's a real minor issue, but it's one that will cause their OEM clients some issue as well as Microsoft (possibly even on these here forums) because of that. It kind of strikes me as lowering quality standard, as no other CPU out there in recent years has really had an issue like that. That kind of thing can be perceived as a quality issue as well...

iirc it's a problem with the power management. I think I read something like this before, where the Haswell CPU shuts down almost completely when idle and that can cause problems when you have open files on an external device.

These things happen all the time. Intel hasn't lowered their quality one bit. I know people who work for Intel. Intel takes its pride in quality manufacturing, ahead of pretty much everything else, even new innovation.

Eeehhhhh, it's iffy. A bug like that being confirmed and not tried to be fixed but rather just shipped out, it strikes me a cut in quality. It's like Windows vista, it was rushed out before being top notch. But we'll have to see how this goes, that bug doesn't seem so big though....just possibly annoying.
