Windows Blue poised to become Windows 8.1

Microsoft officials supposedly have decided on the final name for Windows Blue. The final decision, one of my sources told me, is that it will be Windows 8.1.

The client version of Blue, codenamed Windows Blue, is a refresh of Windows 8. It is expected to be released to manufacturing around August of this year. As I've blogged a few times, Microsoft is planning to position Blue as part of the Windows 8 wave, not as Windows 9.

I thought it was obvious that MS intended Blue to just be SP1+?

I think I remember the Windows Phone 7 Mango update was called the 7.1 update, but was officially the Windows Phone 7.5 update by Microsoft. A x.1 branding makes no sense. Look at android, it goes from 4.0, 4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2, 4.2.2 and then 5. mac os pretty much puts the WHOLE build number in the version update.... 10.9.423.4.2321.3.44.2235.11.4632.1242.1

Windows Phone went from version 7, 7.5, then to 8. Version 7 to 7.5 took about six months, 7.5 to 8 about 15 months. It's a logical progression versus other platforms.

Of course it doesn't help that Windows 8 is officially Microsoft Windows Version 6.2.

I'm sure there's a really good reason for this, but it's not very intuitive.

Don't think too hard about it.

8.1 is user facing, and all that matters is that its a little bit better than 8

6.2.1 is the kernel, and is used for internal purposes.

Actually Windows Blue kernel number is 6.3, and I guess that the final build number will be 9600.

So let me get this straight: 8.1 is actually 6.3 and not 6.2.1 even though 8 is 6.2, and 6.3 is also 9600?
