Windows 8 ekes out 3.2 percent of desktop OS market

Microsoft's latest OS is gaining ground but is still in fourth place behind Vista, according to Web tracker Net Applications.

Windows 8 is slowly carving out a slightly larger slice of the OS market.

The latest flavor of Windows captured 3.17 percent of all desktop OS traffic tracked by Net Applications in March. That was a small gain from the 2.67 percent share in February.

Since its official debut last October, Windows 8 has very gradually risen up the ranks, at least in Net Applications' Web traffic reports.

We're in the process of buying new computers at my office and are more or less going with Windows 8 on them right from Dell. This gives us the OEM license, it's the same price as Windows 7 and since we are using laptops, the faster bootups and such of Windows 8 are very welcome to the end users.

I end up doing a 15 minute training session with those I deploy Windows 8 too. I've also found a few YouTube videos on how to use Windows 8 that I make them watch before I will answer any additional questions.

Yes, Vista did better - and that wasn't popular - the economy wasn't good then either.

As pp implies , when people have to buy a new pc - it has 8 on it.

Inevitable the uptake will increase as time goes by.

Ouch! Lower acceptance rate than Vista. That has to be a punch in the gut for Microsoft. Even if people are wrong, haters, young, old, dumb etc, the number still are bad. Acceptance of the product is bad. It's becoming less of an opinion and more a fact that people are rejecting Microsoft's direction with Windows 8.

What is amazing is the number of XP users, though much of that may represent the corporate sector, which is somewhat locked into XP and can't change easily. However, for those corporate entities that have plans to move from XP (very likely plans that have been on the cards for a year or two), will most likely move to Windows 7. I know that Australian government entities are moving to Windows 7 and will be on that platform for many years to come. If that is reflected worldwide, then Windows 7 numbers will be increasing.

Yes, one or two people will refuse to accept the situation.

Never mind, If MS hang on long enough, the customers will have to buy - they are going to need a new machine at some stage.

But they can ask for Windows 7 on their new PCs. And the corporate customers are probably going to do that in large numbers. Joe Public will probably not know though.

You are right, in the main Joe public will just get what is on offer.

I finally know of someone who got a pc with 8 on it. Didn't know he could get anything else - and couldn't stand it . A relative tried to put 7 on it - succeeded, only to find some drivers are not available from the oem.

Now they have a useless pc.

The original purchaser ( I believe with some help from a knowledgeable relative ) has since bought another pc with 7 on it.

I didn't get any more detail than that, but there you go.

That may have been an aberration, or some XP users trying out 8 and going back. What's interesting also is that OSX is going up, albeit by a small amount, and Other (assuming Linux) is going down. Vista has held on surprisingly well, all things considered.

The other thing to consider is how these figures are derived. There will be many who have dual boot, or separate PCs, where they are simply trying/playing with Windows 8, but with no real intention of using it fully and there will also be a lot of developers using Windows 8, but not as main machines.

That means there will possibly be a fair chunk of the users that aren't really Windows 8 users, but still contribute to the figures. These numbers will be worth watching over the next few months.

Yeah, but that is neither here not there. That was the same scenario with the other systems. I think we are comparing apples to apples.

In 'other', there may be quite a few lumped in, not only Linux. It does not really say what that is.

And if further proof is required:

The Department of Human Services will replace 30,000 PCs by the end of 2013, upgrading its entire fleet to Windows 7. It has already replaced 10,000, a department spokesperson said. The Australian Taxation Office is also expected to upgrade more than 20,000 PCs to Windows 7 by the end of the year in a project that was first publicised in the first half of 2012.
