Yes, one or two people will refuse to accept the situation.

Never mind, If MS hang on long enough, the customers will have to buy - they are going to need a new machine at some stage.

But they can ask for Windows 7 on their new PCs. And the corporate customers are probably going to do that in large numbers. Joe Public will probably not know though.

You are right, in the main Joe public will just get what is on offer.

I finally know of someone who got a pc with 8 on it. Didn't know he could get anything else - and couldn't stand it . A relative tried to put 7 on it - succeeded, only to find some drivers are not available from the oem.

Now they have a useless pc.

The original purchaser ( I believe with some help from a knowledgeable relative ) has since bought another pc with 7 on it.

I didn't get any more detail than that, but there you go.

I don't think it was the usage per se. It was the percent market share. That can also happen when another participant loses.

A couple of my relatives bought laptops a couple of months ago with Windows 7. But they are geeks and know things.

That may have been an aberration, or some XP users trying out 8 and going back. What's interesting also is that OSX is going up, albeit by a small amount, and Other (assuming Linux) is going down. Vista has held on surprisingly well, all things considered.

The other thing to consider is how these figures are derived. There will be many who have dual boot, or separate PCs, where they are simply trying/playing with Windows 8, but with no real intention of using it fully and there will also be a lot of developers using Windows 8, but not as main machines.

That means there will possibly be a fair chunk of the users that aren't really Windows 8 users, but still contribute to the figures. These numbers will be worth watching over the next few months.

Yeah, but that is neither here not there. That was the same scenario with the other systems. I think we are comparing apples to apples.

In 'other', there may be quite a few lumped in, not only Linux. It does not really say what that is.

And if further proof is required:

The Department of Human Services will replace 30,000 PCs by the end of 2013, upgrading its entire fleet to Windows 7. It has already replaced 10,000, a department spokesperson said. The Australian Taxation Office is also expected to upgrade more than 20,000 PCs to Windows 7 by the end of the year in a project that was first publicised in the first half of 2012.
