Windows 8 in 7" form factor

Summary: A quiet change in the logo requirements for new Windows 8 devices allows Microsoft's hardware partners to build new devices that would compete with popular 7- and 8-inch tablets like the iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD, and Google Nexus 7. Could a Microsoft Reader be just around the corner?

I find this point rather interesting:

The new guidelines relax the minimum resolution for Windows 8 devices to 1024 x 768 at a depth of 32 bits. That’s a significant change from the current guidelines, which require a minimum resolution of 1366 x 768 for a device to be certified with the Windows 8 logo.
The very restrictive resolution requirements preclude many existing devices that are otherwise quite capable of running Windows 8, from doing so.

I doubt whether those other device makers really care about that.

I was mainly considering it from the point of view of those who have lower resolution tablets, laptops etc and simply can't use Windows 8 because of the resolution restrictions. Or at least they can't use the MPI, but that may be a blessing in disguise.

Basically this means Microsoft is allowing OEMs that already have built android tablets to just port over that hardware for Windows 8 RT, as apparently there must not be enough stock of 5 point 1366x736 touch panels, or they are more expensive to be manufactured or bought.

I still don't get why a 7 inch tablet would be desired. I can't see using Windows RT on such a small form factor, let along Office! That's crossing into the line of something Windows Phone should cover... But won't because that's not what Microsoft has ever planned on doing.

A tablet is a portable toy that you carry around for retrieval of information. Who wants to do office applications on it. Whenever I have to do any text input, I do it at home and use my bluetooth keyboard with trackpad. And if I want to do office, I do it at my 22" screen.

And the accent for tablets is on 'portable'. 7" is a lot more portable than the bigger devices.

At that size, again, a decently sized smartphone would be a better buy than a separate 7 inch tablet. It's just odd to me to have a 4.5 inch smartphone, 7 inch phablet, then have full sized PC(s). Too many devices.

I have no smartphone - no cell phone at all. I would not even have a phone if it was not for the wife. There is a phone booth down the road. That would suffice for me.

The nearest phone booth from my house I THINK, it probably at least 13 miles away from me. I honestly don't believe we have any of those anymore.

But honestly, if it weren't for texting and data use for GPS navigating and being able to check my bank account balances anywhere in town, I wouldn't even have my Windows Phone connected. But I do because of the time to time calls I get, and the messages, and the email...
