Microsoft's Office 'Gemini': Windows Blue's twin

Windows Blue, Windows Server Blue, Windows Phone Blue, Windows Services Blue. The one thing missing from this list of next-generation Microsoft releases is a Blue version of Office. Is there one?

There is. But it's not code-named Blue. It's code-named Gemini.

Gemini is a wave of Office releases coming over the next two years, according to my sources. Wave No. 1, which will be aligned with Windows Blue, will be updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, which should be out this fall, I am hearing.

Will be interesting to see in what direction Microsoft is going with this new Office Suite. Seem that Microsoft is not backing down on the new Modern Apps.

Hi there
I don't have too many problems with "Modern Office" pe se -- but with things like EXCEL or POWERPOINT often you really will need to have multiple windows open concurrently -- for instance say you were a Market trader charting / tracking 5 different stocks (or options) at the same time.

OK you could technically have the five graphs on the same worksheet -- but if you wanted to place different trades as different prices you'd probably want to know your exact open position at any one time -- this can't realistically be done on ONE window -- you need to have all the positions viewable concurrently (that is if you hoped to make any money out of trading).

Ms isn't going to abandon the concept of re-sizeable concurrent windows any time soon -- although they might call the interface something else than "Desktop".

Cheers
jimbo

Microsoft isn’t just working on a follow-up operating system to Windows 8; according to ZDNet’s Mary Joe Foley, it’s also working on next-gen Office apps that would follow the Windows Blue-like model of frequent updates. However, the company doesn’t refer to it as Office Blue to go along with Windows Blue; instead, it’s internally known as “Gemini.” A follow-up to Office’s latest iteration, Foley’s sources say that the Gemini team has a strategy it means to follow over the course of two years – the first part of which is releasing new Office apps sometime this fall or around Windows Blue’s launch.
Details are scarce, since this is leaked information, but Foley believes the new apps are probably modern UI versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. So far, from among the whole Office suite of apps, only OneNote and Lync have full modern UI versions. It’s also possible that the new Gemini apps will be improved to work better with touchscreen devices than their present iterations. Foley says the second part of the strategy revolves around Office 365, so it most likely has something to do with the ability to get platform-independent Office apps via Microsoft’s subscription service. The Gemini team is also reportedly aiming to release updates and new features more frequently when the apps become available.
We’re hoping to hear more about the next-generation Microsoft Office at BUILD 2013 in June, so stay tuned.

I'm curious about it. Microsoft future intentions started discretely with Office 2013, what in my opinion is a mid term between the classic Office we are used to and the future of the suite.

It's a good move, as quite a few user's complain about it, when they use the suite on a touch-device.

I like the new logo for office out of all the ones they've made for office this is one of the only one that relates to their program. The individual program icons aren't as great compared to it but that's fine. The design of the programs itself shoe a better version of what their desktop could have looked like. It was closer to the appeal of the zune desktop software for me. I mean there are still aspects that I find too flat and 2D but overall the idea is much better executed there than on the actual desktop itself.

I find this quote in the article to be quite revealing:
Once work was underway, the MOX and Office teams realized building Metro-Style/Windows Store apps was going to be a lot tougher than building something like Office Web Apps. One of my sources said that the Office team wanted to build "hybrid Metro" apps, which would have been desktop apps that were allowed to "participate" in the Metro environment, which would have enabled the team to port large amounts of existing Office code over to Windows 8 and Windows RT. But that would have resulted in Metro-Style apps that didn't adhere to all the WinRT/Windows 8 rules and regulations. As a result, that plan was scrapped.

The core problem they're going to run into is with the walled garden. Office has traditionally been built so that other programs can access its data programmatically. You can make a script or a VB program to be able to read cells out of a spreadsheet and what not. If they are going to make the suite as apps, they're going to have to extend the walled garden concept so that other apps and programs can 'attach' themselves into their garden and are able to access their data and call certain methods.

The walled garden per app is awesomesauce if you have small dedicated programs(i.e. mobile), but you must have intercommunication if you actually want them to actually replace .exe's.

Ideally, the program gets turned inside out with various functions of Office becoming Apps(i.e. Grammar checker, Spell checker, etc), and driven by a master App(Word, Excel, etc) that simply feeds the helper apps like a spell checker with data extracted from either documents from Word or a presentation from PowerPoint. The master apps also access data and properties from each other or any of the other apps. Everything is regulated by the overall walled garden so that the overall system is not compromised.
