Windows Blue: No Windows desktop mode!? No!

Probably not true. If it is, I'm going to become one of those weird people who keep using Windows 7/8 for decades to come. Aside from gaming, I write and I have a very efficient filing system for my stories and other uses for the desktop I can't do without. I'll upgrade components forever if I have to. And I doubt the OEMs would be impressed by this.

It's hard enough to teach my middle aged mother to use a computer and they just keep making it harder for people. Still, probably just another dumb rumour along the lines of 'the moon landing never happened' or 'the XBOX 720/PS4 won't have a disc drive.

I already don't use Metro stuff at all, I just do not understand why would I want to launch any application full screen on a big-screen monitor. So I mostly use Windows 7. I have Windows 8 just to keep track of what's going on, but for work I need multiple windows with many different programs working at the same time. That's why the processor has 4 cores and that's why the OS supports multitasking (unlike my old iPad, for example, which is therefore a toy and not a tool).

If they come up with a new OS without this capability, I just won't use it. Windows 7 works perfectly fine, there really no reason to change it for something else.

    Hi there
Not Gartner again --why ANYBODY ever believes what they say is totally beyond me -- their predictions have EXACTLY the same result that you'd get by RANDOM GUESSING.

I think with Gartner - a reference to Julius Caesar (approx. 55 BC) might be in order .."Et Tu Brutus" .... I come not to bury Caesar but to Praise him...." and we all know what happened next ("The Ides of March" -- about the right time of year). If all this is Double Dutch --sorry Arjen and other Dutch friends I Have -- then just Google a bit -- about time some people got a wider "Classical education" for a change.

Praise by Gartner means the exact opposite -- so a condemnation by Gartner also means the REVERSE is likely too.

Ms won't KILL the desktop as such but it will possibly be called something else. There's a LOT of stuff that whichever way you look at it can't be done with Tablets or mobile devices -- this won't be anything like the same market that PC's now have but it still will be an important one. Actually a few tablet "converts" are beginning to re-adopt the "Ultrabook" format again so tablets aren't going to take over the world any time soon --if ever. Tablets have their uses but can't really ever replace a proper "computer" in a lot of scenarios.

    Cheers

if Microsoft removes the desktop app, more will look to go to a mac. and I think their stocks will go way down. windows 8 is hard enough for businesses to swallow now, take away the desktop app and businesses will have no choice but to look somewhere else

I wouldn't buy an Apple product at gunpoint, but I'll happily slip over onto one of my Linux builds.

No desktop, no point, no use.

Same here, I'm afraid. I see nothing in Blue to spark my interest, at all. But I am becoming fond of Mint 14, so that could happen also.
But a computer without a desktop, a big monitor and mouse/101-keyboard control is not a real computer, but a content-consuming toy.
My tablet is fun, but it is NOT a serious computer, and I do not like the way computing seems to be sinking to the lowest common denominator (eg total computer-illiterates who only use Farcebook, send tweets and suck Youtube clips). That's NOT computing. Never was, never will be. Tabs and smart-phones are fine for these people, who never needed the power and versatility of a PC in the first place
but for many of us they will never replace a big, powerful desktop/big laptop with keyboard/mouse control. Touch doesn't cut it on these big machines, they NEED the desktop environment. The Metro side of things doesn't bother me, as long as the desktop remains, and touch stays optional.

I take offense at the current trend to refer to anything desktop/mouse/keyboard-related as 'legacy'. It's not, and it isn't going away. And if MS won't supply it, we will look elsewhere. See, we need this shi... oops, stuff to CREATE the content that the proles then consume on their tablets. No powerful desktops (and those who know how to actually use them), no content for the great unwashed. Then where would they be?
