Do we need another Windows OS?

Microsoft made a case this week for Windows RT, its stripped down version of Windows 8. But do we need a third version of Windows?

It's been about five months now since Windows RT debuted. And this week Microsoft made a case to CNET for the new operating system.

Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president, Windows Planning, Hardware & PC Ecosystem, told CNET: "It was a ton of work for us and we didn't do the work and endure the disruption for any reason other than the fact that there's a strategy there that just gets stronger over time."

And he went on to spell out reasons why RT is necessary.

Isn't Windows RT just a version of Windows for ARM processors? Like a Windows xp 64 bit Edition?

The only way that will happen is, if over the next 2 to 3 years,
people just refuse to use Win8 en masse they will change.
They can hold out for a while before it starts to hurt and they realize what it is people want

However, people are sheople, they will flock to what is popular.
If MS can pull this off and make it popular, it will survive and you will never see a start menu again unless you add through 3rd party.
But if rumors hold true, it won't matter cause the Desktop will no longer exist.

While I like 8 the way it is now, with the customizations I can do now, what comes in the near future remains to be seen.

I don't think that is likely.

There is only so long people can hold off.

Prices have been slashed which may help MS .

MS can continue to subsidise the oems and wait it out.

What would change things is if competition suddenly appears. Where would that come from.

Why is it that everyone thinks Microsoft will change back just because they think they should? Why is it Linux and OS X are allowed to do whatever they feel like it, albeit Microsoft is just being stupid for changing the game without asking certain individuals for their permission?

    Ain't computing fun . . .

Intel will be a big player in this with their new Haswell chip. If it lives up to its fanfare of better performance and low wattage it could replace ARM in tablets and then we won't need RT.

Simple answer, because MS is a monopoly and if you are a monopoly you have certain civic reponsibilities.
