It's not a case of 'potential' it's a case of why was it broken in the first place? Anyone that has used a desktop for even a few years accepts 'Windows' as a fundamental part of the computing experience. The MPI delivers a 'Window' experience.

I was using, until recently, a Windows 6.5 mobile phone. I found it very easy to arrange my most used apps in one screen (under Programs and kind of like the desktop). It also has a taskbar for features that are used more often, just like a Windows 7 taskbar and it provides a start menu equivalent for all those apps that I didn't use frequently (All Programs). This is very much like a traditional Windows 7 and previous methodology of menu arrangement.

So why the need for radical change?
    Hi there
perhaps when Android first came out people didn't have too many apps on their phones and the interface looked "new" for people.

I think that now one can see very easily the limitations of the "Standard Android Tiled" interface it will have to change.

It's got so ridiculous now that I actually HAVE TO use TWO phones for accessing apps -- I travel a lot so travel apps are quite useful for me - but there really isn't any way of renaming or ordering them in any meaningful sequence on a phone - so I have basically HALVED the number of apps on each phone so its easier to keep track of them rather than endless scrolling on one phone --- rather goes against the whole idea doesn't it. !!

With the new larger HTC's and SAMSUNG's coming out the limitations of the standard interface are going to become pretty obvious to almost everyone -- so unless Ms change the basic W8 start screen they will definitely have "Backed the wrong Horse".

Now I'm not necessarily needing the menu back -- I never really used it even on XP but we do need some way of organising the start screen to ways we can conveniently use -- even on Mobile phones (or tablets too -- although you can get more tiles on one screen than a phone so scrolling isn't such a chore).

    Cheers
    jimbo

I don't really miss the start menu as I use toolbars, the quick launch bar and some desktop short cuts - but the start screen is a DISASTER as it exists at the moment.
Which is why I have modified my use of the start screen, who cares anyway? I find the
    decently "Dynamically" sortable order
works well in all apps. There's no need for scrolling, just enter a letter, a thru z, when looking at the start screen and select from a list. (even if one has 100 apps installed) Then again there are many that find all apps to be useless, bogus, unacceptable.

    Like you said ...

That's why I don't really see the start screen as a disaster. Of course, my view is different because I think the start screen could be limited from zero tiles to only a few tiles, not 70 to 100 or more. Why not just use a few instead of cluttering up the screen with groups that exist in the apps area. That may be heresy to a few.

I suppose if flipping to a separate page is annoying, leaving the desktop, or channel surfing (big fan) does not work, then ...

    Yes.

I pretty much need to be able to do this, in order to do my job.

Sometimes I have a second monitor, but other times it's just the one laptop screen and I need to resize the different windows to see a few cells in a spreadsheet here, a database there and an email there, all at the same time. I like to think I organise my windows slightly better than your screenshot, but I have to say it did look awfully familiar .

It seems Windows Blue is a step in the right direction with the more capabilities in Snap but still nowhere near where it would need to be in a Metro-only world.

...and here's an absolute case in point. When I first tried to post that, due to some forum glitch, I got an error message.

So I took a screenshot (as you do... probably a sign that I test software too often ) and then following the instructions in the error message, I sent a message to the Admins.

Due to the ability to have arrange multiple resizeable windows on the Desktop the way I wanted, I was able to arrange the browser at the top of the screen, overlapping the screenshot underneath, so I could copy the text from the screenshot into my message to the admins (as it happens there's no option to actually attach the screenshot).

The ability to split the screen with one window above the other makes it much easier to do this as the two bits of text blocks are much nearer than on the Vertical split of snap.

Just in case anyone's interested, I've just read that Windows 8.1 may also include a straight to the desktop setting.

Windows 8.1 may include a straight to the desktop setting -

Windows 8.1 or Windows Blue will be out this year if things go along as planned, and one of the changes that users may see in the upgrade is an ability to go directly to the desktop interface to bypass the start screen. How we know that? The guys over at Microsoft Portal have discovered a function that hints at it in one of the operating system's files.

Freeeeeky, that appears to be Stardock Start 8. I just found a copy of this, I'm going to try it out. Vrosa, did you install that over the top of regular Windows 8? Im dying to see how it finds my Falcon card.

Clean install in VMWARE 9, then upgrade to MCE.
