It's an app linked to the desktop control panel I believe.

I haven't really played with MetroUI since you can find plenty of information about the changes to Metro in Blue online everywhere plus it's really the desktop I'll be using if I plan on switching over to Blue (ATM I'm back on Windows 7).

So it's going to be a game of cat and mouse from now on between Microsoft and third party software developers that want to provide users what they want.

    Hi there
what's new about that -- for example we have Photoshop rather than the Ms image viewer, VLC instead of Windows media player, 3rd party softyware for backup and restore etc etc.

I'm not sure what Ray8 is trying to say here -- there's ALWAYS been a market for people supplying needs / products that customers want whatever you have.

What about something like a TV -- totally useless if nobody supplied content for it -- I doubt whether people like SAMSUNG or LG are interested in providing programs for their TV's so would they by the same logic condemn these organisations since they need "3rd party applications" (i.e TV content) to render their hardware of any use at all.

I asking/suggesting that maybe Microsoft doesn't want third party programs to provide what people want, like Start 8 and ModernMix, and deliberately make changes that hinder their function.

    Hi there
If there's a NEED people will always supply it whatever the restrictions. Ms could make it difficult but certainly it wouldn't stop development nor should it.

Ms like any commercial organisation is about making money -- no customers no money -- so why should they make it difficult for people to supply add ons / accessories etc etc -- especially if it makes the product more attractive to more customers.

In fact unlike "The Fruit Company" Ms has usually bent over backwards to help 3rd parties and OEMS to adapt products (drivers for instance) so they work with windows. Windows also has a very OPEN API so there's nothing to stop anybody designing any product they like for Windows.

Note also things like Visual Studio which were formerly only available to MSDN subscribers are now freely downloadable (Visual Studio 2012) so anybody if they take the trouble and are interested can design applications for windows (and sell them too without paying Ms a penny in royalty fees either).

    Cheers

On the desktop end, I want more speed and bug fixes (like the frequent thumbnail regeneration).

On the metro end, I want more speed, more touch friendliness (how about a swype like virtual keyboard from MS for tablet users?), better quality and more functional stock apps, ability to do everything from the metro ui.

That may be the way of the 'Old' Microsoft, but this is the 'Modern' Microsoft.

    Hi there.

Old or Modern -- the Shareholders still want to make money -- that's not going away any time soon --if ever --thank goodness--just think where do you think you'll get your Pensions from if there's no money around -- most Govt's are essentially Bankrupt these days so whatever your politics you are likely to get an ever diminishing amount of help from governments in future.

I'd just hope that companies your Pension funds invest in can continue to prosper otherwise the future outlook would be very bleak indeed -- in fact some countries are already predicting that todays teenagers will actually live less, have poorer diet and health, poorer prospects and a very poor old age (if they live that long) than their parents -- not what we should expect from a so called civilized planet. This is in addition to what seems to be universally recognized (apart from places like Taiwan, S.Korea etc) that modern education is FAR FAR worse than that of 50 years ago inspite of technology like Computers, the Internet etc, large inner city schools are nothing more than "Drug infested Hell Holes" and the reading age of a load of 17 year olds is approximately equivalent to that of a 12 year old 50 years ago.
