I think it is more like 92% of desktops and lappys.

    Obvious why that is.

    1. The general public do not know what Linux is - and it is not generally available all over the place on oem machines.

    2. The general public do know about Mac - but the entry price is around $1400 in the uk - not an option for the majority.

    3. Therefore most people have to buy something with windows on it. There is no effective competition.

Unless some viable competition appears, then MS will eventually be able to foist what they want on the remaining 92% .

They will put up with it, get used to it, etc.

I think most current PC users, if asked to use a PC set up with Ubuntu or Mint, would be able to navigate it fairly quickly, as both (notwithstanding the Unity interface, which isn't hard to understand, just annoying like the MPI) are much like Windows 7 and earlier. Ubuntu has always reasonably closely followed the Windows UI, so that users have a familiar interface.

As said, it's the lack of drivers that has hobbled Linux for some time, but if China does pick up Ubuntu and run with it, then I'll bet that manufacturers will sit up and take notice. It will also lead to a far greater interest from software companies that currently produce solely for Windows, to start considering Linux as well.

This is possibly the catalyst to bring Linux into a viable alternative to Windows and OSX. People who say never, should read history more closely.

    This Blue thing is interesting.

They might do something different with a later build - but going just from this, they are moving quickly.

Looks like they need to keep the desktop there for the moment, and are trying to keep most away from it.

That would mean in effect MS have total control - as they will have in fact when the desktop has gone.

Big push to get the users onto their services via the advertising billboard.

Fascinating to watch this - I expect most of those innocently buying these things right now have no idea.

Here's an interesting article from an Android developer, as to how Android could be improved on larger screen tablets. It kind of echoes what I and other have said about the apps environment in Windows 8 (what works on a small screen doesn't always work as well on a large screen):

Curved glass - maybe. I got the impression it was a flexible screen of some kind. Perhaps Apple are working on that for something else.

Interesting view of 'early computers'. I don't think they were around when I started with computers in 1958.

It was reported that Apple is actually working on the watch computer but seems to be a bit behind some others.

Maybe I should have said personal computers not mainframes, you must have been working on one of only a handful of computers at that time.
My early interest in computers was all about graphics, 3D Ray Tracing and that, but also anything to do with video and photos even 3D gaming. To me a computer that couldn't handle heavy graphics wasn't a computer, the exact opposite to popular thinking at the time, which is why the Amiga died out, well that and they lost the blueprints to their own hardware, pretty sad.

Well I was a minority then and looks like I might be again.

Who on this forum is suggesting that?

You are making things up again. You may be catching it from Bill.
Ummm.... every person that is against using touch on a desktop and every person that is against Windows 8 insinuates this EXACTLY.

"Microsoft should had just improved Windows 7 with the under the hood tweaks and kept the metro junk out." This has been paraphrased roughly that I've seen in the past year and a half.
