Windows RT a necessary disruption

An insight into the idea of RT.
.Microsoft defended the future viability of Windows RT during an interview with CNET today.Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president, Windows Planning, Hardware & PC Ecosystem, talked with CNET about what makes RT important for the software giant.
The platform took some hard knocks before and after it debuted on October 26. A lot of the criticism has focused on the lack of compatibility with older Windows applications, in contrast to backward-compatible Windows 8 on Intel-based devices.
But Angiulo says Microsoft has good reason to stick with the platform.

It all makes perfect sense to me too, I've been reading a lot of people who own both the iPad and the Surface very seldom go back to the iPad, except for some games.
I was going to say something but better not:think:

I have an ASUS Windows RT tablet, and as a small business person, it is my mobile workhorse. I use it daily to stay in touch, get access to files from the cloud, do light Excel and Word editing and consume a lot of business related content. I went with RT because of battery life and full integration with my MSFT ecosystem. Couldn't ask for more -- well, maybe a few more apps and a better Mail program.

Asus have always made good stuff, I've used quite a few of their motherboards over the years. I've read a lot of comments from people like yourself that always seem positive so this thing should be selling more. The apps will come once the developers start to wake up.

That's the problem with Microsoft stuff, it's either too much, too little or too right. I'm willing to bet any money that if they had the perfect tablet with 500,000 apps most people would still be criticising it, it's just the way it is with Microsoft.

Sent from my iPad, but eventually from a MS tablet.

Now that Microsoft has got skin in the game I really don't want to buy anymore Apple Strudel.

Some interesting figures to add to the discussion. Will be slow for Windows 8 to gain traction.

Tablet PC Architectures Dominated by ARM and iOS
If those figures are correct, I'll eat my iPad in 2017, luckily for me I won't have it by then. They did a similar projection with Android tablets a few years ago, with Android hardly gaining at all, look at it now.

I can't remember what the first years percentage of Android tablets was, but I dare say it was under 2%. When I bought mine there were literally no Apps made for tablets.

Unfortunately not many companies have the hypnotic power to induce people to buy rubbish like Apple does.

It's just a funny thing to say, a tablet is much quicker and easier to just post a few words on a forum, I don't care what tablet it is, as long as its a recent tablet. What does it matter what the tablet can do above and beyond typing in a couple of words.

Plus you've already made it public knowledge that the Surface is almost unusable as far as you're concerned.

It's the keyboard and the touchpad that are lacking for me on the Surface. The full keyboard and the much larger touchpad on the Chromebook make it more comfortable. Not to mention, I can use the chromebook on my lap in the chair with my feet propped up, cannot do the same with the Surface.

Have I now? Please tell me where I posted that I found the Surface to be unusable!.

It's never been effective on me. I've not bought a single personal Apple product in my life. I've considered them multiple times, and even came close to a MacBook Air on a couple of occasions, but always decided against them. I don't use iTunes, i don't buy anything from the Apple store. I wouldn't move to an Apple phone unless Apple sponsored me.

With all that said, I can certainly see the appeal their products have for a lot of people. Just because I don't buy them and have always decided against them in my evaluations, does not make them rubbish.

LOL, that's the typical executive position.

But it's all too often how I sit and use these devices at home. Either lying in bed, or sitting in the recliner with my feet propped up. Try that with a Surface Pro (or RT), with the keyboard attached and tell me how that works out for you. It's like trying to write on a piece of paper that is hanging in mid air by a string. Not effective, at all.

Unlike some people I use a tablet the way it's meant to be operated, with touch. If I was writing a novel I'd probably attach a keyboard and mouse, otherwise I whip it out with one hand and start typing on the screen like I'm doing now.

So if you're lying in bed or on a recliner, you're telling me you need a keyboard, come on now. I think you need a guide on how to use a tablet.

I wonder if that guy who came down from the mountain needed a keyboard to type out the 10 Commandments on his tablet.

To type effectively, yes I want to use a physical keyboard. You might be fine with slow typing, but I flat out guarantee that my responses are taking me a fraction of the time that they are taking you.

Even with such a small response as above, on a real keyboard that took me no more than about 5 seconds.

I can't even read that fast let alone type that fast, I very rarely use a keyboard to type on this or any other forum, especially when I'm in bed or lounging around.
