Windows Blue upgrades maybe shown in leaked videos

Leaked videos that hit the Web today hint at a host of possibilities for Microsoft's next Windows release, codenamed Blue. Not only does it look like there might be improvements across the operating system, but also the speech recognition feature in Windows Phones could get a noteworthy upgrade.

    Hi there
That article doesn't actually say anything -- there are some great touch enabled painting programs that work fine already even on W7 (although you will need specialized hardware like decent pen writing devices). The latest photoshop (OK expensive) can do this really OK as well.

I doubt though any decent artist would rely on simply "Classical touch" with finger swipes --you'd definitely need some time of "brush" and pen tools to get anything better than a first year kindergarten standard image.

What does it offer ("improvements " ? like what - nothing said) ?

It seems to be a not very creative piece of total B/S. Of course Ms will be working on future developments and the next version of the OS --that was true even in Windows/286, Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.11 days so what's new. While Code writing might still be far off there certainly would be some sort of analysis and Proof of Concept going on before even a line of code was written.

I don't doubt either that Ms will improve the current W8 -- although currently the code seems quite efficient. One way of minimizing and improving it would be to take a leaf out of Linux's book -- have a very small kernel which boots very quickly indeed and only dynamically load those services and hardware drivers it needs when those services are actually required. To avoid re-loading these at next boot they can easily be saved in an area like the Linux Swap spaces. If new hardware is required then the driver is just loaded one time as before.

Ms DO need to address the whole Metro problem though -- No I'm not re-hashing the tired old argument about the Start Menu etc.
For use where larger (and multiple) screens are employed Metro apps need to be able to be WINDOWED and be displayed concurrently -- by all means allow the user to switch to Full screen if they want to.

I'd like to have something like the old "Gadgets" back so you could see dynamically changing tiles on your DESKTOP while you are composing a document, performing EXCEL calculations, or even just surfing the web. Unless you are on a phone full screen browsing seems a total waste of time anyway since you often want to have more than one site open at once -- and you don't always want to tab between them.

On a phone no prob -- but even on a 10 inch screen (Surface Pro tablet and similar) I can see times where you wouldn't always want to be in Full screen mode. Typical instance you might be on two different social networking sites at the same time etc.

    Cheers

The main improvement they have to make is a distinction of traditional PC setups and touch setups. It would be simple to have the installer distinguish between the two worlds like it senses a zero rotation disk (SSD) and does things specific to the needs of that type of disk (alignment, shut off defrag, etc.).

Likewise the installer could sense whether it is working with a touch screen - then install the touch UI and features, or a traditional screen - then install the traditional UI. That would fix the main problem of Windows 8 and everybody would be happy.

After all, Windows 8 is not a bad system - in fact it is a very good system. But the touch UI and functions spoil it for a normal PC.

I have a normal PC. Nothing spoiled IMO. I like immersive functions. IMO, my preference >> charms, corners, edge UI, apps area, pull down closing, edge multi tasking, and start screen key functions seem a-ok ... Separate paging of windows exists in Linux doesn't it? i.e. desktop #1, desktop #2, desktop #3 etc...

    Yes, I am a minority.
...not opposed to the sale by Microsoft of a purely desktop only OS with no metro at all and with a start menu.
...does not seem to be in their business plan, however. I think they believe they know better.

They will see when they look at their revenue charts in the next few months. It is only too bad that they are bringing down the whole PC industry in the process.
