Microsoft's first PC lives!

Microsoft's first PC, the Surface Pro, has survived Round One.A report this week said 400,000 Surface Pros were sold in about a month since its release. That's a decent start (contrary to the media's take).
Remember, this is an $899-$999 tablet (though I prefer to describe it as a full-blown Windows PC compacted and stuffed into a tablet's chassis), not a $199 Nexus 7 or $329 iPad Mini.

Oh well maybe someone will notice this one, good luck.

Microsoft has sold little more than a million of the Surface RT version and about 400,000 Surface Pros since their debuts, according to three people, who asked not to be named because sales haven’t yet been made public. The company had ordered about 3 million Surface RTs, they said. Brent Thill, an analyst at UBS AG, had initially projected that Microsoft would sell 2 million Surface RT devices in the December quarter alone.

The poor reception for Surface, unveiled last year, adds to challenges facing Microsoft’s Windows unit, which brings in a quarter of the company’s revenue.

“It’s pretty clear that things were bad entering the year, and at least for the moment they’re getting worse,” Gauna said. “The path to a successful Surface, in the same way that they were successful with Xbox, is not very clear to me right now.”

You have to replace an otherwise perfect device because the battery can't be replaced? I think Greenpeace has found a new worst enemy, Apple can breathe a sigh of relief.

And how do you copy all of your data etc from the dead device? Trust in the Microsoft professionals at your local Microsoft store? Oh, wait, we don't have any local Microsoft stores.

Might not be a bad deal if/when it happens if they send you the latest version of the device.

I'd really like to see them come up with an option whereby you can use an older version of the device as a 'trade-in' on a newer model and buy the newer one at a price like that. They could then donate the older versions to schools.

What?. . .Did everyone run out of reasons to shoot down Windows 8 as a desktop OS, so they found an old post about Windows Surface Pro in hopes of spreading more BS about how bad the Surface Pro is because it hasn't sold millions, and millions of these tablets by now (you can bet Apple is happy at this point).

This site is starting to remind of me of the early days of the Seven Forums, and the FUD that XP holders on were espousing at that time. . . oh well just need to stock up on Popcorn, and Diet Pepsi. . .

So I have to put in my thoughts about where Microsoft is taking the Surface...

Basically, they're sodding off OEMs for not getting with it.

You see, when they announced the Surface tablets initially, I remember quite distinctly how they said it was going to be limited (in sales and distribution) to the physical and online Microsoft Stores. I don't know if they were selling them elsewhere other than the US, but I think it was just a few countries. They did that so they weren't competing against their clients, and providing a model for OEMs to use that isn't the ipad and is the prime definition of the Windows 8 tablet PC.

Fast forward a few months, Microsoft claims that they're somewhat disappointed with their OEM partners for not releasing enough touch enabled PCs, let along tablet PCs given the fact they already knew that Windows 8 was to be touch designed since basically /build 2011. After Windows 8's launch and at the point in time, there simply weren't enough touch PCs out there, they're mostly Windows 7 modded PCs for Windows 8, basically a better touch pad, a new Start key and a new Windows sticker. They're not selling as well for obvious reasons, Windows 8 wants to be touched and fondled, the PCs aren't there YET. Some OEMs like Dell and Samsung are iffy about Windows 8. Other OEMs that have failed at building android tablets can't use their current hardware for Windows 8 RT due to the higher standards, which Blue will reduce. Microsoft feels OEMs are too slow at achieving their vision of the tablet PC and Windows, so they're going on their highway. Which is probably another reason for the Surface to begin with.

How I remember it went, the distribution of the Surface tablets was just through Microsoft Stores. Then it was amazon.com, and then later it was announced in December that best buy and Staples were to start carrying the RT tablets. That opened up distribution, though RT supply seems to have been short. Then later in January, the Pro comes out to best buy, staples, I think Costco should soon, and somewhere else. Problem again was that supply was enough in physical stores to literally count with one hand. Too little supply, larger distribution. It seems now it's settled out some, but now they've already announced the RT and Pro tablets to be sold in Russia, China, Brazil? All sorts of countries now. That wasn't even close to the original plan, it was supposed to be that OEMs were to copy the Surface, like Nokia is rumored to be doing, and not the ipad, like Samsung and Vizio and several other OEMs are doing. It was supposed to be that there should had been several Pro tablets out there by Windows 8's launch (Surface was announced in Juneish, launched in October and January, enough time to get SOMETHING like a Surface of such). But that didn't happen. Lenovo has said that touch PCs are selling more on Windows 8 than nontouch. They say it's a high demand product, touch PCs that is. There aren't enough touch panels to meet the Windows 8 requirements (10 point multitouch in several sizes and resolutions, unlike one or two sizes for android) and consumer demand. Honestly, I think it's ridiculous that OEMs, KNOWING that Windows 8 was to be the way of Windows and touch computing, didn't get a lot of those touch PCs at launch...

But anyways, since that didn't happen, Microsoft seems to be taking the route of, "If you bloody motherlovers aren't getting your poop in a group about this, then we don't care if we become a main PC vendor for Windows and push everyone out. That's your problem, not ours. If you don't like it, deal with it or get out."

The Surface brand for sure isn't a fad or an experiment, it's a long haul change of PCs and Windows. Microsoft has even said the Surface will be expanded on, and is developing them further.

Personally, I love it. I hate OEM machines. I'd rather have a well-designed, well-made benchmark system in the mix where you know that you're getting your moneys worth. If you want to go cheapo, you can.. but you're always going to get kneecapped on something. It would not surprise me in the least to see SP outselling all other OEM versions of it combined.

Either way, with the initial sales figures off the Pro, especially given the flop that was RT... there was no doubt they were going to go far and wide with it as its a high-margin device to make money back. They also don't have to sell anywhere near as many as a pure tablet to be raking in major bank. You sell what people want to buy. And people have wanted to buy the SP.

And bear in mind that Google is largely doing the exact same thing with the Chromebook Pixel to try to show that Chromebook != Cheapbook. They've previously let the OEM's put out whatever crapbook they could come up with and the brand suffered as a result.

Certain OEM PCs I like, but usually have a price tag to them that says "very well built."

google is doing a poor job at showing that with the chromebook. It's either a 250-300 dollar laptop or a 1,000 dollar touch laptop that runs an OS that shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as that let alone installed.

Prices are dropping for RTs better get them while they are still around.

Prices of Windows RT tablets drop, point to failure of OS - Computerworld

About freaking time, Windows RT was supposed to be less expensive than normal x86 PCs, nope. Five hundred dollar entry price for a Windows RT PC? Really right now? No wonder why they didn't sell, you could just buy a normal Windows 8 laptop for that money.

Three hundred should had been the starter price to BEGIN with.

It's quite clear that Microsoft thought that the RT was so fantastic that people would be prepared to pay a premium. I wonder if this idea came from the same study groups that led to the changes in Windows 8?
