Things are looking up for Microsoft Success!!!

Sorry naysayers, but the doom and gloom might be coming to an end.

Remember, this is an $899-$999 tablet (though I prefer to describe it as a full-blown Windows PC compacted and stuffed into a tablet's chassis), not a $199 Nexus 7 or $329 iPad Mini. Also remember this is just the start. The Pro should evolve to the point where you can have a 1.5 or 2 pound tablet with all-day (at least) battery life -- and still get all of the performance of a mainstream Windows 8 laptop.
And that's the deal-closer for me. It's fast. Don't believe me? Check out these benchmarks.
"Surface Pro is easily the fastest tablet on the market today," Anandtech said.
The basic point being that Intel's Ivy Bridge silicon crushes Apple's A6X-based iPad and ARM-based Android tablets in most benchmarks.
And it's not just numbers -- you feel it. Everything pops and there's almost none of the lag you invariably run into with other tablets.

I know this because I've been using the Pro and its speed is addictive -- despite the comparative heft and shorter battery life compared with other tablets (though I wouldn't call 2 pounds "heavy" and battery life isn't as bad as reviewers make it out to be if you tweak Windows 8 settings).

I just hope all the Apple Faithful keep ignoring whats actually going on. After all, their minis should sell double-digit millions(with a thin profit margin) this quarter.

Looks like only the Windows 8 lovers are going to comment on this story, it's been up for over 4 hrs, with not one hater making a comment.

I've got the Mini, I'll let you in on a secret, it's a little piece of crap. I'll let you in on another secret, Brooke is a hopeless Apple lover, this must have been tough for him to write.

I've noticed Cnet bending a tiny bit in the last couple of months, their Editor in Chief also wrote a good article on the Surface Pro. I actually hope the RT survives as well, because I think that could be a good little offshoot for them as well.

I hope RT survives also since I love it and it's good to see Pro selling well.

Most comments from people I've seen that own the RT have been very positive. I've got a few tablets at the moment but even I'm having a hard time not buying one. I'll probably try to hold out for the next one, it doesn't look like the Pro is coming to Australia anytime soon.

Hi there
we should rename it to iWantit.

Actually I do --although April is when as self employed I have to pay my taxes so finding around 900 USD at the moment isn't an option for me.
I'm sure I'll succumb sooner or later.

Another helping of "Apple Crumble" with my dinner please.

Cheers

No problems, unfortunately it looks like reasonably good news stories don't attract any attention here, it's a good thing there's at least 3 or 4 of us to read it.

This review wasn't even close, but then, I already knew that.

And if you think about it, a full fledged touch screen PC in a form factor this small for only 1000USD isn't a bad price at all when you consider the cost of building a real PC these days.

Microsoft wins again.

There are more surface pro fans here than Bill seems to think, and from the looks of it there will be many more. ;)

Hi there
From what I've seen of the surface pro --it's GREAT hardware - but 1,000 USD is 1,000 USD. My Acer Aspire 11 inch laptop while having a less powerful processor (i3) is still very light and portable and with an SSD and 8GB of memory together with decent full HDMI output to a decent monitor does everything I need -- cost around 470 USD so I could get TWO of these laptops for the price of the surface pro.

I know you can't make direct comparisons -- How many decent BMW series 7 cars could I get for the price of a Ferrari three or four or maybe more - However buying a Ferrari and buying a surface PRO are slightly different markets.

I certainly would love to try the surface pro but 1,000 USD is just outside my range currently -- when analysing sales figures this fact also needs to be taken into account --there's plenty of people who would LOVE to have one --it's just outside their price range for the moment.

Ah well -- there's always the EUROMILLIONS lottery next week. !!! "Hope springs eternal".

Cheers

I love how the stories comment about the "heft" of the device, but I've never found it to be heavy. That has never been a concern of mine in the couple of weeks since I have had one.

It's a solid device and has lots of power and performance, but I'm unsure how many people are willing to spend the money on it. I've worked on other tablets, (androids and ipad's alike), and I've never found surfing the web to really be slow on any of them. I certainly don't feel like the browser is 5x faster on the Surface than an iPad. In benchmarks it might be, and depending upon what you are doing, it could be much faster...but I think for average joe's, it won't be that noticeable.

Me either. But then I've never really used an iPad, which is what they're probably comparing it against. I usually compare it against the weight and physicality of carrying a laptop, at which point its a dream. And i find i love going tablet mode. I'll go keyboard/laptop when doing any type of intensive input(programming and what not).

This is beginning to be a pretty tired debate stemming from those that just don't get it, don't need it, don't have funds for it, or are just unwilling to change or can't due to lack of common sense.

Here are some responses from another forum:

400,000 in a little over a month with supply issues is just horrible.

I'm ashamed of all the cheap asses out there.

It really is no surprise. No one was expecting either to be a blockbuster hit. A 1k tablet isn't really in the reach of many people, even with supply issues. RT isn't at the level to compete to begin with.

In response to some guy that said RT should've cost $250-300 and Pro $500 compared to his ultrabook he got for $700.

So I just really read this after work.

So you want a company to take your laptop, reduce it to Surface size while incorporating a touch digitizer and keyboard for $200 less?

Ahahhhahhhahhh
lmao.gif

Keep dreaming dude...
laugh.gif

So I took the Surface to work and people who aren't techie liked it. Even said they were getting one.

Meh... talk is cheap. Just like everyone out there. If I didn't want or have use for something like it, I probably wouldn't buy it either.

Most people's needs are about at Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 level and people wonder why they don't sell as well as a $300 tab.
Picard.png

In response to this from another:

Eh like others said its tooo powerful and big for a tablet

its too under powered / optioned and not as usable as a notebook

It does each somewhat but fails to do either great

That's what all the haters say. The truth is, it actually works great.

Right now, i'm comfortably in my living room watching MFC and flash tv on desktop, while browsing LS2 on modern IE.

What are you doing on your couch with your ipad or Nexus 7?

I've got 3 iPads, the iPad2 is okay but terrible resolution, the iPad3 has fantastic resolution but is heavier, the iPad Mini is slow, bad wireless and unbearable resolution. All 3 are let down by a lack of ports and file system and being in a walled garden isn't too great either.

If you're thinking of buying one I'd wait till the next generation or go for the RT. By the way I'm not an Apple lover, I do a lot of travelling and need something light to book Hotels and Flights etc. I write the cost of the iPad off on the trip, I also bought 3 Netbooks for the same reason.

The number one reason I'm so happy to see Microsoft entering this market is that I won't be tempted to by Apple again.

No the walled garden comes from Apple using iTunes to control what you use on your PC, they try to control everything you buy through the iTunes Store from music to apps. Apple also has a nasty habit of restricting the use of ports so it's a lot harder to put what you want on their devices, it's also harder to take off.

For instance if I have a thumb drive with photos and music I can't just plug it into an iPad and use the files. There are ways around these things but its just more steps. A lot of people jailbreak iPads and phones because of all the restrictions.
